Translation of the HOLY QUR'AN - 56.Surat Al-Wāqi`ah (The Inevitable) - سورة الواقعة

Surat Al-Wāqi`ah (The Inevitable) - سورة الواقعة
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
[In the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]

56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
Pronunciation
Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAat
Translation
When the Occurrence occurs,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
When the [imminent] Event comes to pass, [when] the Resurrection takes place,
56:2
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
Pronunciation
Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathiba
Translation
There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
there will be no denying its coming to pass, [there is] no soul to deny [it], by repudiating it as it did in this world,
56:3
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ
Pronunciation
Khafidatun rafiAAa
Translation
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[it will be] abasing [some], exalting [others], that is, it will manifest the abasing of some people by [virtue of] their admission into the Fire, and [manifest] the exalting of others by their admission into Paradise.
56:4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا
Pronunciation
Itha rujjati al-ardu rajja
Translation
When the earth is shaken with convulsion
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
When the earth is shaken with a violent shock,
56:5
وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا
Pronunciation
Wabussati aljibalu bassa
Translation
And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and the mountains are pulverised to [tiny] pieces,
56:6
فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُّنبَثًّا
Pronunciation
Fakanat habaan munbaththa
Translation
And become dust dispersing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
so that they become a scattered dust (the second idh, ‘when’, is a substitution for the first idh),
56:7
وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً
Pronunciation
Wakuntum azwajan thalatha
Translation
And you become [of] three kinds:
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and you will be, at the Resurrection, three kinds, categories:
56:8
فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
Pronunciation
Faas-habu almaymanati maas-habu almaymanat
Translation
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Those of the right [hand], those who are given their record [of deeds] in their right hand (fa-ashābu’l-maymanati is the subject, the predicate of which is [the following mā ashābu’l-maymanati]) — what of those of the right [hand]? — a glorification of their status on account of their admittance into Paradise.
56:9
وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ
Pronunciation
Waas-habu almash-amati maas-habu almash-amat
Translation
And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And those of the left [hand] (al-mash’ama means al-shimāl, ‘left’), each of whom is given his record [of deeds] in their left hands — what of those of the left [hand]? — an expression of contempt for their status on account of their admittance into the Fire.
56:10
وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ
Pronunciation
Wassabiqoona assabiqoon
Translation
And the forerunners, the forerunners -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And the foremost, in [the race to do] good, namely, the prophets (al-sābiqūna is a subject) the foremost: (this [repetition] is to emphasise their exalted status; the predicate [is the following, ūlā’ika’l-muqarrabūna])
56:11
أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Pronunciation
Ola-ika almuqarraboon
Translation
Those are the ones brought near [to Allah]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
they are the ones brought near [to God],
56:12
فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ
Pronunciation
Fee jannati annaAAeem
Translation
In the Gardens of Pleasure,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
in the Gardens of Bliss,
56:13
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Thullatun mina al-awwaleen
Translation
A [large] company of the former peoples
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
a multitude from the former [generations] (thullatun mina’l-awwalīna, the subject), that is to say, a group of individuals from communities of old,
56:14
وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Waqaleelun mina al-akhireena
Translation
And a few of the later peoples,

and a few from the later ones, from among the community of Muhammad (s), being the foremost from among the communities of old and this community (the predicate [is the following, ‘alā sururin mawdūnatin]),
56:15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ
Pronunciation
AAala sururin mawdoona
Translation
On thrones woven [with ornament],
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[will be] upon encrusted couches, [their linings] woven onto rods of gold and jewels,
56:16
مُّتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ
Pronunciation
Muttaki-eena AAalayha mutaqabileen
Translation
Reclining on them, facing each other.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
reclining on them, face to face (muttaki’īna ‘alayhā mutaqābilīna constitute two circumstantial qualifiers referring to the [subject] person of the predicate [‘they’]).
56:17
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ
Pronunciation
Yatoofu AAalayhim wildanunmukhalladoon
Translation
There will circulate among them young boys made eternal
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They will be waited on by immortal youths, resembling young boys, never ageing;
56:18
بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ
Pronunciation
Bi-akwabin waabareeqa waka/sinmin maAAeen
Translation
With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
with goblets (akwāb are drinking-vessels without handles) and ewers (abārīq [are vessels that] have handles and spouts) and a cup (ka’s is the vessel for drinking wine) from a flowing spring, in other words, wine flowing from a spring that never runs out,
56:19
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
Pronunciation
La yusaddaAAoona AAanhawala yunzifoon
Translation
No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
wherefrom they suffer no headache nor any stupefaction (read yanzafūna or yanzifūna, [respectively derived] from nazafa or anzafa al-shāribu, ‘the drinker became inebriated’), in other words, they do not get a headache from it nor do they lose their senses, in contrast to [the case with] the wine of this world;
56:20
وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
Pronunciation
Wafakihatin mimmayatakhayyaroon
Translation
And fruit of what they select
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and such fruits as they prefer,
56:21
وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ
Pronunciation
Walahmi tayrin mimmayashtahoon
Translation
And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and such flesh of fowls as they desire, for themselves to enjoy,
56:22
وَحُورٌ عِينٌ
Pronunciation
Wahoorun AAeen
Translation
And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and houris, maidens with intensely black eyes [set] against the whiteness [of their irises], with wide eyes (‘īn: the ‘ayn here is inflected with a kasra instead of a damma because it [the kasra] better harmonises with the yā’; the singular is ‘aynā’, similar [in pattern] to hamrā’; a variant reading [for wa-hūrun ‘īn] has the genitive case wa-hūrin ‘īn)
56:23
كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ
Pronunciation
Kaamthali allu/lui almaknoon
Translation
The likenesses of pearls well-protected,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
resembling hidden, guarded, pearls,
56:24
جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Jazaan bima kanooyaAAmaloon
Translation
As reward for what they used to do.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
a reward (jazā’an is an object denoting reason or a verbal noun, with the operator being an implicit [verb], in other words, ‘We have appointed for them the mentioned as a reward’ or ‘We have rewarded them [this]’) for what they used to do.
56:25
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا
Pronunciation
La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwanwala ta/theema
Translation
They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They will not hear therein, in Paradise, any vain talk, any lewd words, or any sinful words,
56:26
إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا
Pronunciation
Illa qeelan salaman salama
Translation
Only a saying: "Peace, peace."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
but only the saying, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’ (salāman salāman substitutes for qīlan, ‘the saying’) which they will hear.
56:27
وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ
Pronunciation
Waas-habu alyameeni maas-habu alyameen
Translation
The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And those of the right [hand] — what of those of the right [hand]?
56:28
فِي سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ
Pronunciation
Fee sidrin makhdood
Translation
[They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Amid thornless lote-trees, nabk trees,
56:29
وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ
Pronunciation
Watalhin mandood
Translation
And [banana] trees layered [with fruit]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and clustered plantains, banana trees, [weighed down] with its load [of fruit] from top to bottom,
56:30
وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ
Pronunciation
Wathillin mamdood
Translation
And shade extended
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and extended shade, [one that is] permanent,
56:31
وَمَاءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ
Pronunciation
Wama-in maskoob
Translation
And water poured out
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and cascading water, running continuously,
56:32
وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ
Pronunciation
Wafakihatin katheera
Translation
And fruit, abundant [and varied],
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and abundant fruit,
56:33
لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ
Pronunciation
La maqtooAAatin walamamnooAAa
Translation
Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
neither unavailable, during certain times, nor forbidden, because of [its] cost,
56:34
وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ
Pronunciation
Wafurushin marfooAAa
Translation
And [upon] beds raised high.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and mattresses [that are] raised, on top of couches.
56:35
إِنَّا أَنشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنشَاءً
Pronunciation
Inna ansha/nahunna inshaa
Translation
Indeed, We have produced the women of Paradise in a [new] creation
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Verily We have created them with an [unmediated] creation, namely, the wide-eyed houris, [We created them] without the process of birth,
56:36
فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا
Pronunciation
FajaAAalnahunna abkara
Translation
And made them virgins,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and made them virgins, immaculate — every time their spouses enter them they find them virgins, nor is there any pain [of defloration] —
56:37
عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا
Pronunciation
AAuruban atraba
Translation
Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
amorous (read ‘uruban or ‘urban, plural of ‘arūb, meaning ‘a woman passionately enamoured of her spouse’), of equal age (atrāb is the plural of tirb),
56:38
لِّأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
Pronunciation
Li-as-habi alyameen
Translation
For the companions of the right [who are]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
for those of the right [hand] (li-ashābi’l-yamīni is the relative clause of [either] ansha’nāhunna, ‘We have created them’, or ja‘alnāhunna, ‘[We] made them’), who are:
56:39
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Thullatun mina al-awwaleen
Translation
A company of the former peoples
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
A multitude from the former [generations],
56:40
وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Wathullatun mina al-akhireen
Translation
And a company of the later peoples.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and a multitude of the later ones.
56:41
وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ
Pronunciation
Waas-habu ashshimalima as-habu ashshimal
Translation
And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And those of the left [hand] — what of those of the left [hand]?
56:42
فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Fee samoomin wahameem
Translation
[They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Amid a scorching wind, an infernal wind, permeating the pores of skins, and scalding water, water of extreme temperatures,
56:43
وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ
Pronunciation
Wathillin min yahmoom
Translation
And a shade of black smoke,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and the shade of pitch-black smoke,
56:44
لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
Pronunciation
La baridin wala kareem
Translation
Neither cool nor beneficial.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
neither cool, like all other shade, nor pleasant, [nor] agreeable in its appearance.
56:45
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
Pronunciation
Innahum kanoo qabla thalikamutrafeen
Translation
Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed before that, in the world, they used to live at ease, enjoying [life’s] comforts, never wearying themselves with [an act of] obedience,
56:46
وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ
Pronunciation
Wakanoo yusirroona AAalaalhinthi alAAatheem
Translation
And they used to persist in the great violation,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and they used to persist in the great sin, namely, idolatry.
56:47
وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ
Pronunciation
Wakanoo yaqooloona a-itha mitnawakunna turaban waAAithamana-inna lamabAAoothoon
Translation
And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we indeed be resurrected? (in both instances [a-idhā and a-innā] the two hamzas may be read either by pronouncing them fully, or by not pronouncing the second, and in either case inserting an intervening alif).
56:48
أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
Pronunciation
Awa abaona al-awwaloon
Translation
And our forefathers [as well]?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
What! And our forefathers too?’ (read a-wa-ābā’unā, [with the wa-] being for supplement, the hamza [a-] for the interrogative; here and in the previous instance, it is used to express ‘remoteness [of probability]’; a variant reading has aw-ābā’unā, as a supplement with aw, and that to which this is supplemented is the [syntactical] locus of inna and its subject).
56:49
قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Qul inna al-awwaleena wal-akhireen
Translation
Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Say: ‘Truly the former and the later [generations]
56:50
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
Pronunciation
LamajmooAAoona ila meeqatiyawmin maAAloom
Translation
Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
will be gathered for the tryst, the time, of a known day, that is, the Day of Resurrection.
56:51
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ
Pronunciation
Thumma innakum ayyuha addalloonaalmukaththiboon
Translation
Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then indeed you, the erring, the deniers,
56:52
لَآكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ
Pronunciation
Laakiloona min shajarin min zaqqoom
Translation
Will be eating from trees of zaqqum
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
will assuredly eat from a Zaqqūm tree (min zaqqūm, the explication of shajar, ‘tree’),
56:53
فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ
Pronunciation
Famali-oona minha albutoon
Translation
And filling with it your bellies
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and fill therewith, with the tree, your bellies,
56:54
فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ
Pronunciation
Fashariboona AAalayhi mina alhameem
Translation
And drinking on top of it from scalding water
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and drink on top of that, the consumed Zaqqūm, boiling water,
56:55
فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ
Pronunciation
Fashariboona shurba alheem
Translation
And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
drinking like the drinking (read sharba or shurba: verbal noun) of thirsty camels’ (hīm is the plural of masculine haymān and feminine haymā, similar [in pattern] to ‘atshān, ‘atshā, ‘thirsty’).
56:56
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
Pronunciation
Hatha nuzuluhum yawma addeen
Translation
That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
This will be the hospitality for them, what has been prepared for them, on the Day of Judgement, the Day of Resurrection.
56:57
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
Pronunciation
Nahnu khalaqnakum falawlatusaddiqoon
Translation
We have created you, so why do you not believe?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
We created you, We brought you into existence from nothing. Will you not then affirm [this] truth?, in resurrection? For the One able to create [from nothing] is also able to repeat [this creation].
56:58
أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ
Pronunciation
Afaraaytum ma tumnoon
Translation
Have you seen that which you emit?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have you considered the sperm that you emit?, the sperm you spill in the wombs of women?
56:59
أَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ
Pronunciation
Aantum takhluqoonahu am nahnu alkhaliqoon
Translation
Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Is it you (a-antum: read by pronouncing both hamzas fully, or by replacing the second one with an alif or not pronouncing it, but inserting an alif between the one not pronounced and the other one, or without this [insertion] in the four instances [here and below]) who create it, that is, the sperm [making it] into a human being, or are We the Creators?
56:60
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ
Pronunciation
Nahnu qaddarna baynakumualmawta wama nahnu bimasbooqeen
Translation
We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
We have ordained (read qaddarnā or qadarnā) death among you, and We are not to be outmanoeuvred from, We are not incapable [of],
56:61
عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ
Pronunciation
AAala an nubaddila amthalakumwanunshi-akum fee ma la taAAlamoon
Translation
In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
replacing [you with], [We are not incapable of] appointing, your likes, in your place, and making you, creating you, in what you do not know, in the way of forms, such as apes or swine.
56:62
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad AAalimtumu annash-ata al-oolafalawla tathakkaroon
Translation
And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
For verily you have known the first creation (al-nashā’ata: a variant reading has al-nash’ata), why then will you not remember? (tadhakkarūna: the original second tā’ [of tatadhakkarūna] has been assimilated with the dhāl).
56:63
أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ
Pronunciation
Afaraaytum ma tahruthoon
Translation
And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have you considered what you sow?, [what] you stir of the earth to place seeds therein?
56:64
أَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ
Pronunciation
Aantum tazraAAoonahu am nahnu azzariAAoon
Translation
Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Is it you who make it grow, or are We the Grower?
56:65
لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ
Pronunciation
Law nashao lajaAAalnahu hutamanfathaltum tafakkahoon
Translation
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
If We will, We could surely turn it into chaff, dried vegetation producing no seed, and you would remain (zaltum is actually zaliltum, the lām having a kasra inflection; but it has been omitted to soften it), that is to say, you spend all day, bemused (tafakkahūna: one of the original tā’ [tatafakkahūna] letters has been omitted), surprised by this, and you would say:
56:66
إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ
Pronunciation
Inna lamughramoon
Translation
[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
‘We have indeed suffered loss!, [losing] what we expended on the cultivation.
56:67
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ
Pronunciation
Bal nahnu mahroomoon
Translation
Rather, we have been deprived."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay, but we are deprived!’, prevented from [reaping] our provision.
56:68
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ
Pronunciation
Afaraaytumu almaa allatheetashraboon
Translation
And have you seen the water that you drink?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have you considered the water you drink?
56:69
أَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنزِلُونَ
Pronunciation
Aantum anzaltumoohu mina almuzni am nahnualmunziloon
Translation
Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Is it you who cause it to come down from the [rain] clouds (muzn is the plural of muzna) or are We the Causer of its coming down?
56:70
لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ
Pronunciation
Law nashao jaAAalnahu ojajanfalawla tashkuroon
Translation
If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
If We willed, We could make it bitter, salty, undrinkable — why then will you not give thanks?
56:71
أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِي تُورُونَ
Pronunciation
Afaraaytumu annara allateetooroon
Translation
And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have you considered the fire that you kindle?, [the fire] which you produce out of the [oil of] green trees?
56:72
أَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنشِئُونَ
Pronunciation
Aantum ansha/tum shajarataha am nahnualmunshi-oon
Translation
Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Was it you who created the tree thereof, [trees] such as the markh, the ‘afār or the kalkh [‘fennel’], or were We the Creator?
56:73
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ
Pronunciation
Nahnu jaAAalnaha tathkiratanwamataAAan lilmuqween
Translation
We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
We made it a reminder, of the fire of Hell, and a boon, a provision, for the desert-travellers (al-muqwīn derives from [the expression] aqwā al-qawmu, ‘they have reached al-qawā or al-qawā’, that is, al-qafr, ‘desolate land’, which is a wilderness (mafāza) that has neither vegetation nor water).
56:74
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
Pronunciation
Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem
Translation
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So glorify, exalt the transcendence [of], the Name (ism is extra) of your Lord, the Tremendous, God.
56:75
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ
Pronunciation
Fala oqsimu bimawaqiAAi annujoom
Translation
Then I swear by the setting of the stars,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay, I swear (fa-lā uqsimu: lā is extra) by the setting-places of the stars!
56:76
وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
Pronunciation
Wa-innahu laqasamun law taAAlamoona AAatheem
Translation
And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed it, the swearing by these [setting-places of stars], is a tremendous oath, if you only knew — if you were people of [deep] knowledge, you would realise the magnitude of this oath.
56:77
إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ
Pronunciation
Innahu laqur-anun kareem
Translation
Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
This, namely, what is being recited to you, is indeed a noble Qur’ān,
56:78
فِي كِتَابٍ مَّكْنُونٍ
Pronunciation
Fee kitabin maknoon
Translation
In a Register well-protected;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
in a Book, inscribed, guarded, preserved, and this is the Mushaf;
56:79
لَّا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ
Pronunciation
La yamassuhu illa almutahharoon
Translation
None touch it except the purified.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
which none touch (lā yamassuhu is a predicate functioning as a prohibitive command) except the purified, those who have purified themselves of ritual impurities, [56:80] a revelation, revealed, by the Lord of the Worlds.
56:80
تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Tanzeelun min rabbi alAAalameen
Translation
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
56:81
أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ
Pronunciation
Afabihatha alhadeethi antummudhinoon
Translation
Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent

56:82
وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Pronunciation
WatajAAaloona rizqakum annakum tukaththiboon
Translation
And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
56:83
فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ
Pronunciation
Falawla itha balaghati alhulqoom
Translation
Then why, when the soul at death reaches the throat
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Why then, when it, the spirit, during the throes [of death], reaches the [dying person’s] throat (hulqūm is the passage for food)
56:84
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ
Pronunciation
Waantum heena-ithin tanthuroona
Translation
And you are at that time looking on -

and you are, O you attending the dying person, at that moment looking, at him —
56:85
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Wanahnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walakinla tubsiroon
Translation
And Our angels are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and We are nearer to him than you are, to know [of his state], but you do not perceive (tubsirūna derives from al-basīra, ‘perception’) that is to say, you do not realise this —
56:86
فَلَوْلَا إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
Pronunciation
Falawla in kuntum ghayra madeeneen
Translation
Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,

why then, if you are not going to face a reckoning, [if] you are [not] going to be requited by your being resurrected, in other words, [why then, if] you are not going to be resurrected as you claim,
56:87
تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
Pronunciation
TarjiAAoonaha in kuntum sadiqeen
Translation
Bring it back, if you should be truthful?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
do you not bring it back, [why] do you not restore the spirit to the body after it has reached the throat, if you are truthful?, in what you claim (the second law-lā, ‘why … if’, is [repeated] to emphasise the first one; idhā, ‘when’, is an adverbial particle qualifying tarji‘ūna, ‘bring it back’, to which both conditions are semantically connected). The meaning is: ‘Why do you not bring it back, when, in repudiating resurrection, you are being truthful in this repudiation?’ That is to say, ‘Let death also be repudiated [as impossible] in its case just as [you claim that] resurrection is [impossible]’.
56:88
فَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
Pronunciation
Faamma in kana minaalmuqarrabeen
Translation
And if the deceased was of those brought near to Allah,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Thus if he, the dead person, be of those brought near,
56:89
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Farawhun warayhanun wajannatunaAAeem
Translation
Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
then repose, that is, there will be for him relief, and a goodly provision, and a garden of Bliss (does this response belong to the ammā, ‘thus’, or to in, ‘if’, or to both? Different opinions [are given regarding this]).
56:90
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
Pronunciation
Waamma in kana min as-habialyameen
Translation
And if he was of the companions of the right,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And if he be of those of the right [hand],
56:91
فَسَلَامٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
Pronunciation
Fasalamun laka min as-habialyameen
Translation
Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
then ‘Peace be to you’, that is, [then] for him there will be [peace by way of] security (salām) from chastisement, [a greeting] from those of the right [hand], [arising] from the fact that he is one of them.
56:92
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ
Pronunciation
Waamma in kana mina almukaththibeenaaddalleen
Translation
But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But if he be of the deniers, the erring,
56:93
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Fanuzulun min hameem
Translation
Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
then a welcome of boiling water,
56:94
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Watasliyatu jaheem
Translation
And burning in Hellfire
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and a roasting in Hell-fire.
56:95
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ
Pronunciation
Inna hatha lahuwa haqqualyaqeen
Translation
Indeed, this is the true certainty,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
This indeed is the certain truth (haqqu’l-yaqīn: an example of an adjectivally qualified noun being annexed to its adjective).
56:96
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
Pronunciation
Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem
Translation
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Tremendous (as [explained] above [in verse 74]).
