Once Muslims prayed towards Jerusalem (i.e. Baitul-Maqdis), but during the
Prophet [S.A.W.S]’s lifetime it was changed to Mecca (i.e. Baitul Haram/ Ka'ba).
From the minbar, the pulpit, the Imam who leads the prayer gives the sermon at
the Friday noon community prayers. And the person who pronounces the Adhaan is
called Mu'adhdhin.

Some Hadith Regarding Adhaan/Call to Prayer/Azaan
Sahih Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 8: Prayers, Number 392:
Narrated Bara'
bin 'Azib (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] prayed
facing Baitul-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months but he loved to face the
Ka'ba (at Mecca) so ALLAH [S.W.T] revealed: "Verily, WE have
seen the turning of your face to the heaven!" (2:144) So the Prophet
[S.A.W.S] faced the Ka'ba and the fools amongst the people namely "the
Jews" said, "What has turned them from their Qibla (Bait-ul-Maqdis)
which they formerly observed"" (ALLAH [S.W.T] revealed): "Say:
'To ALLAH belongs the East and the West. HE guides whom HE will
to a straight path'." (2:142) A man prayed with the Prophet [S.A.W.S]
(facing the Ka'ba) and went out. He saw some of the Ansar praying the 'Asr
prayer with their faces towards Bait-ul-Maqdis, he said, "I bear witness
that I prayed with ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] facing the Ka'ba." So
all the people turned their faces towards the Ka'ba.
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 10: Times of the Prayers, Number 532:
Narrated Salim
bin 'Abdullah (R.A):
My father said, "I heard ALLAH [S.W.T]'s
Apostle [S.A.W.S] saying, 'The period of your stay as compared to the previous
nations is like the period equal to the time between the 'Asr prayer and
sunset. The people of the Torah were given the Torah and they acted (upon it)
till mid-day then they were exhausted and were given one Qirat (of gold) each.
And then the people of the Gospel were given the Gospel and they acted (upon
it) till the 'Asr prayer then they were exhausted and were! given one Qirat
each. And then we were given the Qur'an and we acted (upon it) till sunset and
we were given two Qirats each. On that the people of both the scriptures said,
'O our LORD! YOU have given them two Qirats and given us one Qirat, though
we have worked more than they.' ALLAH [S.W.T] said, 'Have I usurped some of
your right?' They said, 'No.' ALLAH [S.W.T] said: "That is
my Blessing I bestow upon whomsoever I wish."
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 578:
Narrated Ibn
'Umar (R.A):
When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they
used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During
those days, the practice of Adhaan for the prayers had not been introduced yet.
Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people
suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like
the horn used by the Jews, but 'Umar (R.A) was the first to suggest that a man
should call (the people) for the prayer; so ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S]
ordered Bilal (R.A) to get up and pronounce the Adhaan for prayers.
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 582:
Narrated Abu
Huraira (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said,
"When the Adhaan is pronounced satan takes to his heels and passes
wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhaan. When the
Adhaan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama
is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into
the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him
remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that
causes him to forget how much he has prayed."
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 585:
Narrated Abu
Said Al-Khudri (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said,
"Whenever you hear the Adhaan, say what the Mu'adhdhin is saying.
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 588:
Narrated Jabir
bin 'Abdullah (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said,
"Whoever after listening to the Adhaan says, 'Allahumma Rabba
hadhihi-d-da' watit-tammati was-salatil qa'imati, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata
wal-fadilata, wab' athhu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa' adtahu (O ALLAH!
LORD of this perfect call (of not ascribing partners to YOU) and of the
regular prayer which is going to be established! Kindly give Muhammad the right
of intercession and superiority and send him (on the Day of Judgment) to the
best and the highest place in Paradise which YOU promised him)',
then intercession for me will be permitted for him on the Day of
Resurrection").
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 589:
Narrated Abu
Huraira (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said,
"If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Adhaan and for standing
in the first row (in congregational prayers) and found no other way to get that
except by drawing lots they would draw lots, and if they knew the reward of the
Zuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time) they would race for it
(go early) and if they knew the reward of 'Isha' and Fajr (morning) prayers in
congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl."
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 603:
Narrated Malik
bin Huwairth (R.A):
Two men came to the Prophet [S.A.W.S] with the
intention of a journey. The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, "When (both of) you
set out, pronounce Adhaan and then Iqama and the oldest of you should lead the
prayer."
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 620:
Narrated Abu
Huraira (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said,
"The reward of the prayer offered by a person in congregation is twenty
five times greater than that of the prayer offered in one's house or in the
market (alone). And this is because if he performs ablution and does it
perfectly and then proceeds to the Mosque with the sole intention of praying,
then for every step he takes towards the Mosque, he is upgraded one degree in
reward and his one sin is taken off (crossed out) from his accounts (of deeds).
When he offers his prayer, the Angels (P.B.U.T) keep on asking ALLAH
[S.W.T]'s Blessings and ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Forgiveness for him as long as he
is (staying) at his Musalla. They say, 'O ALLAH! Bestow YOUR Blessings
upon him, be Merciful and Kind to him.' And one is regarded in prayer as long
as one is waiting for the prayer."
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 663:
Narrated Abu
Huraira (R.A):
ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Apostle [S.A.W.S] said,
"If the Imam leads the prayer correctly then he and you will receive the
rewards but if he makes a mistake (in the prayer) then you will receive the
reward for the prayer and the sin will be his."
Sahih
Bukhari: Volume 1, Book 11: Call to Prayers (Adhaan), Number 689:
Narrated Abu
Huraira (R.A):
The Prophet [S.A.W.S] said, "The Imam is
(appointed) to be followed. So do not differ from him, bow when he bows, and
say, "Rabbana-lakal hamd" if he says "Sami'a-l-lahu Liman
hamida"; and if he prostrates, prostrate (after him), and if he prays
sitting, pray sitting all together, and straighten the rows for the prayer, as
the straightening of the rows is amongst those things which make your prayer a
correct and perfect one.
Sahih Muslim: Chapter 4, Book 2: Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah), Number
0451:
'Uqba b. 'Amir
(R.A) reported:
We were entrusted with the task of tending the
camels. On my turn when I came back in the evening after grazing them in the
pastures, I found ALLAH [S.W.T]'s Messenger [S.A.W.S] stand and address the
people. I heard these words of his: If any Muslim performs ablution well, then
stands and prays two rak'ahs setting about them with his heart as well as his
face, Paradise would be guaranteed to him. I said: What a fine thing is this!
And a narrator who was before me said: The first was better than even this.
When I cast a glance, I saw that it was 'Umar (R.A) who said: I see that you
have just come and observed: If anyone amongst you performs the ablution, and
then completes the ablution well and then says: I testify that there is no god
but ALLAH and that Muhammad [S.A.W.S] is the servant of ALLAH and HIS
Messenger, the eight gates of Paradise would be opened for him and he may enter
by whichever of them he wishes.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 9, Book 2: Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah), Number 0482:
Abu Huraira
(R.A) reported:
The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] came
to the graveyard and said: Peace be upon you! The abode of the believing people
and we if ALLAH [S.W.T] so wills, are about to join you. I love to see my
brothers. They (the hearers (R.A)) said: Arn't we your brothers-Messenger of
ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S]? He said: You are my companions (R.A), and our brothers
are those who have, so far, not come into the world. They said: Messenger of
ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S], how would you recognize those persons of your Ummah
who have not yet been born? He said: Supposing a man had horses with white
blazes on fore-heads and legs among horses which were all black, tell me, would
he not recognize his own horses? They said: Certainly. Messenger of ALLAH
[S.W.T] [S.A.W.S]. He said: They would come with white faces and arms and legs
owing to ablution, and I would arrive at the Cistern before them. Some people
would be driven away from my Cistern as the stray camel is driven away. I would
call out. Come, come. Then it would be said (to me): These people changed
themselves after you, and I would say: Be off, be off.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 1, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0736:
Anas (R.A)
reported:
Bilal (R.A) was commanded (by the Apostle of
ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S]) to repeat (the phrases of) Adhan twice and once in
Iqama. The narrator said: I made a mention of it before Ayyub (R.A) who said:
Except for saying: Qamat-Is-Salat [the time for prayer has come].
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 3, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0741:
Ibn Umar (R.A)
reported:
The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] had
two Mu'adhdhins, Bilal (R.A) and 'Abdullah b. Umm Maktum (R.A), who (latter)
was blind.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 5, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0747:
'Abdullah b. Amr
b. al-As (R.A) reported:
ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] as saying:
When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on
me, for everyone who invokes a Blessing on me will receive ten Blessings from
ALLAH [S.W.T]; then beg from ALLAH [S.W.T] al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in
Paradise fitting for only one of ALLAH [S.W.T]’s servants, and I hope that I
may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be
assured of my intercession.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 5, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0748:
'Umar b.
al-Khattab (R.A) reported:
The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] said:
When the Mu'adhdhin says:
ALLAH is the
Greatest, ALLAH is the Greatest, and one of you should make this response:
ALLAH is the Greatest, ALLAH is the Greatest;
(and when the
Mu'adhdhin) says: I testify that there is no god but ALLAH, one should respond:
I testify that there is no god but ALLAH,
and when he
says: I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of ALLAH, one should make a
response: I testify that Muhammad [S.A.W.S] is Messenger of ALLAH.
When he (the
Mu'adhdhin) says: Come to prayer, one should make a response: There is no might
and no power except with ALLAH.
When he (the
Mu'adhdhin) says: Come to salvation, one should respond: There is no might and
no power except with ALLAH,
and when he (the
Mu'adhdhin) says: ALLAH is the Greatest, ALLAH is the Greatest, then make a
response: ALLAH is the Greatest, ALLAH is the Greatest.
When he (the
Mu'adhdhin) says: There is no god but ALLAH, and he who makes a response from
the heart: There is no god but ALLAH.
He will
enter Paradise.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 5, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0749:
Sa'd b. Abu
Waqqas (R.A) reported:
The Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] said:
If anyone says on hearing the Mu'adhdhin: I testify that there is no god but
ALLAH Alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad [S.A.W.S] is HIS servant and
HIS Messenger, (and that) I am satisfied with ALLAH as my LORD, with Muhammad
[S.A.W.S] as Messenger and with Islam as din (code of life), his sins would be
forgiven. In the narration transmitted by Ibn Rumh (R.A) the words are:
"He who said on hearing the Mu'adhdhin and verity I testify."'
Qutaiba (R.A) has not mentioned his words: "And I."
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 6, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0754:
Abu Huraira
(R.A) reported:
The Messenger of
ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] said: When the Mu'adhdhin calls to prayer, satan runs
back vehemently.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 6, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0755:
Suhail (R.A)
reported:
That his father sent him to Banu Haritha along
with a boy or a man. Someone called him by his name from an enclosure. He (the
narrator) said: The person with me looked towards the enclosure, but saw
nothing. I made a mention of that to my father. He said: If I knew that you
would meet such a situation I would have never sent you (there), but (bear in
wind) whenever you hear such a call (from the evil spirits) pronounce the Adhan
for I have heard Abu Huraira (R.A) say that the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T]
[S.A.W.S] said: Whenever Adhan is proclaimed, satan runs back vehemently.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 6, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0756:
Abu Huraira
(R.A) reported:
The Apostle [S.A.W.S] said when the call to
prayer is made, satan runs back and breaks wind so as not to hear the call
being made, and when the call is finished he turns round. When Iqama is
proclaimed he turns his back, and when it is finished he turns round to
distract a man, saying: Remember such and such; remember such and such,
referring to something the man did not have in his mind, with the result that
he does not know how much he has prayed.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 15, Book 4: Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat), Number 0808:
Abu Huraira

first row, and they could not (get these opportunities) except by drawing lots,
they would have definitely done that. And if they were to know what excellence
lies in joining the prayer in the first takbir (prayer), they would have vied
with one another. And if they were to know what excellence lies in the night
prayer and morning prayer, they would have definitely come even if crawling (on

in doubt whether it was said:" When the Iqama is pronounced" or"
When call is made".
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 19, Book 5: Zakat (Kitab Al-Zakat), Number 2219:
Mundhir b. Jarir
(R.A) reported on the authority of his father:
While we were in the company of the Messenger
of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] in the early hours of the morning, some people came
there (who) were barefooted, naked, wearing striped woolen clothes, or cloaks,
with their swords hung (around their necks). Most of them, nay, all of them,
belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The color of the face of the Messenger of ALLAH
[S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] underwent a change when he saw them in poverty. He then
entered (his house) and came out and commanded Bilal (R.A) (to pronounce
Adhan). He pronounced Adhan and Iqima, and he (the Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S])
observed prayer (along with his Companion (R.A)) and then addressed (them
reciting verses of the Holy Qur'an): '"O people, fear your LORD, WHO
created you from a single being" to the end of the verse, "ALLAH is
ever a Watcher over you" (4. 1). (He then recited) a verse of Sura Hashr:
"Fear ALLAH. And let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the
tomorrow and fear ALLAH" (59. 18). (Then the audience began to vie with
one another in giving charity.) Some donated a dinar, others a dirham, still
others clothes, some donated a sa' of wheat, some a sa' of dates; till he (the
Holy Prophet [S.A.W.S]) said: (Bring) even if it is half a date. Then a person
from among the Ansar came there with a money bag which his hands could scarcely
lift; in fact, they could not (lift). Then the people followed continuously,
till I saw two heaps of eatables and clothes, and I saw the face of the
Messenger [S.A.W.S] glistening, like gold (on account of joy). The Messenger of
ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] said: He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a
reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted
according to it subsequently, without any deduction from their rewards; and he
who sets in Islam an evil precedent, there is upon him the burden of that, and
the burden of him also who acted upon it subsequently, without any deduction
from their burden.
Sahih Muslim:
Chapter 8, Book 6: Fasting (Kitab Al-Sawm), Number 2399:
'Abdullah b.
Mas'ud (R.A) reported:
That the Messenger of ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S]
had said: Bilal (R.A) would pronounce Adhan (at the fag end of the night in
order to inform the people about the time of the Sahri). So you eat and drink
till you hear the Adhan of Ibn Umm Maktum (R.A) (which was pronounced at the
conclusion of the Sahri and the commencement of the fast).
Jami' at-Tirmidhi: Chapter 21, Book 3: The Book on Al-Witr, Hadith 33:
Abdullah bin
Mas'ud (R.A) narrated that:
ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] said:
"The person closest to me on the Day of Judgment is the one who sent the
most Salat upon me."
Jami'
at-Tirmidhi: Chapter 21, Book 3: The Book on Al-Witr, Hadith 34:
Abu Hurairah
(R.A) narrated that:
ALLAH [S.W.T]’s Messenger [S.A.W.S] said:
"Whoever sends Salat upon me, ALLAH [S.W.T] sends Salat upon him ten
times."
Jami'
at-Tirmidhi: Chapter 100, Book 48: Chapters on Supplication, Hadith 176:
Recorded that
Abu Huraira (R.A) said:
"The Messenger of
ALLAH [S.W.T] [S.A.W.S] said, May he be humiliated, the man in whose
presence I am mentioned and he does not send Salah upon me; may he be humiliated,
the man who sees the month of Ramadan come and go, and he is not forgiven; may
he be humiliated, the man whose parents live to old age and they do not cause
him to be granted admittance to Paradise."
