Surat Ash-Shu`arā' (The Poets) - سورة الشعراء
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
[In the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]

26:1

Ta-seen-meem
Translation
Ta, Seen, Meem.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Tā sīn mīm: God knows best what He means by these [letters].
26:2
تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ
Pronunciation
Tilka ayatu alkitabialmubeen
Translation
These are the verses of the clear Book.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Those, namely, these signs, are the signs of the Manifest Book, the Qur’ān (the genitive annexation [āyātu’l-kitābi] conveys the [partitive] meaning of min), [the Manifest meaning] the one that manifests what is truth from what is falsehood.
26:3
لَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
LaAAallaka bakhiAAun nafsaka allayakoonoo mu/mineen
Translation
Perhaps, [O Muhammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Perhaps, O Muhammad (s), you might kill yourself, out of distress for the reason, that they, namely, the people of Mecca, will not become believers (la‘alla here expresses sympathy, in other words [what is meant is] ‘have pity on it [your self] by alleviating [the burden of] this distress’).
26:4
إِن نَّشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ آيَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَاقُهُمْ لَهَا خَاضِعِينَ
Pronunciation
In nasha/ nunazzil AAalayhim mina assama-iayatan fathallat aAAnaquhum lahakhadiAAeen
Translation
If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
If We will We will send down to them a sign from the heaven before which their necks will remain (fa-zallat, [although grammatically in the past tense] is being used in the sense of the imperfect tense) bowed in humility, and they will believe (since ‘necks’ are described as ‘bowed in humility’, [a status] which in fact refers to those who possess them, the adjectival form [khādi‘ūn, ‘bowed in humility’] used therein is the one [normally] used for rational beings).
26:5
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن ذِكْرٍ مِّنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama ya/teehim min thikrin minaarrahmani muhdathin illa kanooAAanhu muAArideen
Translation
And no revelation comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And there would never come to them from the Compassionate One any remembrance, any [revelation from the] Qur’ān, that is new (muhdathin, is an explicative adjective) but that they used to disregard it.
26:6
فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنبَاءُ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
Pronunciation
Faqad kaththaboo fasaya/teehim anbaoma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oon
Translation
For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Verily then they have denied, it; but soon there will come to them the news, the consequences, of that which they used to deride.
26:7
أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Awa lam yaraw ila al-ardi kamanbatna feeha min kulli zawjin kareem
Translation
Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have they not contemplated, observed, the earth, how many We have caused to grow therein, in other words, [We have caused to grow therein] many, of every splendid kind [of vegetation], [of every] fair species.
26:8
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely in that there is a sign, an indication of the perfection of His power, exalted be He; but most of them, in God’s knowledge, are not believers (kāna here according to Sībawayhi is extra).
26:9
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And surely your Lord, He is the Mighty One, Who will exact vengeance from the disbelievers, the Merciful, Who shows mercy to believers.
26:10
وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ ائْتِ الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-ith nada rabbukamoosa ani i/ti alqawma aththalimeen
Translation
And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And, mention, O Muhammad (s), to your people, when your Lord called to Moses, on the night he saw the fire and the bush, [saying]: ‘Go to the wrongdoing folk, as a messenger,
26:11
قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ
Pronunciation
Qawma firAAawna ala yattaqoon
Translation
The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Pharaoh’s folk, to them as well as him — they wronged their souls by disbelieving in God and [wronged] the Children of Israel by enslaving them — Will they not (a-lā: the hamza indicates a negation meant as a rebuke) show fear?’, of God by being obedient to Him and affirm His Oneness?
26:12
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَن يُكَذِّبُونِ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbi innee akhafu anyukaththiboon
Translation
He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Moses, said, ‘My Lord, I fear they will deny me,
26:13
وَيَضِيقُ صَدْرِي وَلَا يَنطَلِقُ لِسَانِي فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَىٰ هَارُونَ
Pronunciation
Wayadeequ sadree walayantaliqu lisanee faarsil ila haroon
Translation
And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and that anguish will constrain my breast, because of their denial of me, and that my tongue will not utter clearly, to deliver the Message, because of the knot in it. So give the Mission to, my brother, Aaron, alongside me.
26:14
وَلَهُمْ عَلَيَّ ذَنبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَن يَقْتُلُونِ
Pronunciation
Walahum AAalayya thanbun faakhafuan yaqtuloon
Translation
And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And I have sinned against them, by my slaying of the Egyptian man, and I fear they will slay me’, for this.
26:15
قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ فَاذْهَبَا بِآيَاتِنَا ۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّسْتَمِعُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala kalla fathhababi-ayatina inna maAAakum mustamiAAoon
Translation
[Allah] said, "No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Said He, exalted be He: ‘Certainly not!, they shall not slay you. Go both of you, you and your brother — this address [although in the dual form] is predominantly for the person present as opposed to the absent one — with Our signs. We will indeed be with you, hearing, what you say and what is said to you (ma‘akum: the two [Moses and Aaron] are referred to here with the plural pronoun).
26:16
فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَا إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Fa/tiya firAAawna faqoola innarasoolu rabbi alAAalameen
Translation
Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers of the Lord of the worlds,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So the two of you approach Pharaoh and say, “Indeed We are — [indeed] each of the two of us is, the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds, to you,
26:17
أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
Pronunciation
An arsil maAAana banee isra-eel
Translation
[Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
that you should let go forth with us, to Syria, the Children of Israel” ’. So they approached him and said to him that which has been mentioned.
26:18
قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala alam nurabbika feenawaleedan walabithta feena min AAumurika sineen
Translation
[Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Pharaoh, said, to Moses, ‘Did we not rear you among us, in our homes, as a child?, as an infant, only recently born but weaned, and did you not stay with us for years of your life?, for thirty years — he would dress from Pharaoh’s clothes and ride chariots of his, and was referred to as Pharaoh’s son.
26:19
وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ الَّتِي فَعَلْتَ وَأَنتَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ
Pronunciation
WafaAAalta faAAlataka allatee faAAaltawaanta mina alkafireen
Translation
And [then] you did your deed which you did, and you were of the ungrateful."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And you committed that deed of yours — namely, his slaying of the Egyptian — being an ingrate’, a denier of my favours to you in having reared you [among us] and not enslaved you.
26:20
قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَا إِذًا وَأَنَا مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ
Pronunciation
Qala faAAaltuha ithanwaana mina addalleen
Translation
[Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Moses, said, ‘I did that then, when I was astray, from the knowledge and the Message which God would later give me.
26:21
فَفَرَرْتُ مِنكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Pronunciation
Fafarartu minkum lamma khiftukumfawahaba lee rabbee hukman wajaAAalanee mina almursaleen
Translation
So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me wisdom and prophethood and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So I fled from you, as I was afraid of you. Then my Lord gave me judgement, knowledge, and made me one of the messengers.
26:22
وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَيَّ أَنْ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
Pronunciation
Watilka niAAmatun tamunnuha AAalayyaan AAabbadta banee isra-eel
Translation
And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
That is a favour with which you now reproach me that you have enslaved the Children of Israel’ (an ‘abbadta banī Isrā’īl, is explicative of tilka, ‘that’) in other words, you have enslaved them but not me: there is no favour in that, for your enslavement of them is wrong (some [scholars] have reckoned there to be an interrogative hamza of denial at the beginning of this verse [a-tilka ni‘matun, ‘is that a favour?’]).
26:23
قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala firAAawnu wama rabbu alAAalameen
Translation
Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Pharaoh said, to Moses, ‘And what is “the Lord of the Worlds” ’, the One Whose Messenger you say you indeed are? In other words: what exactly is He? And since there is no way for creation to know the true nature of God, but only to know Him through [an articulation of] His attributes, Moses, blessings and peace be upon him, responds to him with [mention of] some of these [attributes]:
26:24
قَالَ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbu assamawatiwal-ardi wama baynahuma in kuntummooqineen
Translation
[Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, in other words, the Creator of [all] that — should you have conviction’, that He, exalted be He, is their Creator, then believe in Him alone.
26:25
قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala liman hawlahu alatastamiAAoon
Translation
[Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Pharaoh, said to those, noblemen among his folk, who were around him, ‘Did you not hear?!’, his response, how it does not correspond to the question [I asked]?
26:26
قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbukum warabbu aba-ikumual-awwaleen
Translation
[Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Moses, said, ‘Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers’. Now, even though this [fact] is comprised by what was [said] before it enrages Pharaoh, and therefore:
26:27
قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ الَّذِي أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ
Pronunciation
Qala inna rasoolakumu allatheeorsila ilaykum lamajnoon
Translation
[Pharaoh] said, "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘Verily this messenger of yours sent to you is a madman!’
26:28
قَالَ رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbu almashriqi walmaghribiwama baynahuma in kuntum taAAqiloon
Translation
[Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Moses, said, ‘The Lord of the east and the west and all that is between them — should you comprehend,’, that He is such [a Lord] then believe in Him alone.
26:29
قَالَ لَئِنِ اتَّخَذْتَ إِلَٰهًا غَيْرِي لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُونِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala la-ini ittakhathta ilahanghayree laajAAalannaka mina almasjooneen
Translation
[Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Pharaoh, said, to Moses: ‘If you choose any god other than me, I will surely make you a prisoner!’. His [Pharaoh’s] prison was very harsh, for a person would be shut up [in a dungeon] underground alone, where he could neither see nor hear anyone else.
26:30
قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَيْءٍ مُّبِينٍ
Pronunciation
Qala awa law ji/tuka bishay-in mubeen
Translation
[Moses] said, "Even if I brought you proof manifest?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Moses, said, to him: ‘What, would you do this even, if I bring you something manifest?’, patent proof of my Mission?
26:31
قَالَ فَأْتِ بِهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala fa/ti bihi in kunta mina assadiqeen
Translation
[Pharaoh] said, "Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Pharaoh, said, to him: ‘Then bring it, if you are truthful’, in this.
26:32
فَأَلْقَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ ثُعْبَانٌ مُّبِينٌ
Pronunciation
Faalqa AAasahu fa-ithahiya thuAAbanun mubeen
Translation
So [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So he threw down his staff, and lo! it was a manifest serpent, a great snake.
26:33
وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيْضَاءُ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ
Pronunciation
WanazaAAa yadahu fa-itha hiya baydaolinnathireen
Translation
And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white for the observers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then he drew out his hand, he brought it out of his pocket, and lo! it was white, glowing, before the onlookers, and not its usual skin colour.
26:34
قَالَ لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُ إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ
Pronunciation
Qala lilmala-i hawlahu inna hathalasahirun AAaleem
Translation
[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Pharaoh, said to the council around him, ‘Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer, an expert in the art of magic,
26:35
يُرِيدُ أَن يُخْرِجَكُم مِّنْ أَرْضِكُم بِسِحْرِهِ فَمَاذَا تَأْمُرُونَ
Pronunciation
Yureedu an yukhrijakum min ardikumbisihrihi famatha ta/muroon
Translation
He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you advise?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
who seeks to expel you from your land by his sorcery. So what do you advise?’
26:36
قَالُوا أَرْجِهْ وَأَخَاهُ وَابْعَثْ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo arjih waakhahu wabAAathfee almada-ini hashireen
Translation
They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Put him and his brother off for a while, postpone [judgement of] their affair, and send musterers into the cities
26:37
يَأْتُوكَ بِكُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Ya/tooka bikulli sahharin AAaleem
Translation
Who will bring you every learned, skilled magician."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
to bring you every cunning sorcerer’, to surpass Moses in the art of magic.
26:38
فَجُمِعَ السَّحَرَةُ لِمِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
Pronunciation
FajumiAAa assaharatu limeeqatiyawmin maAAloom
Translation
So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well-known day.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So the sorcerers were assembled at a fixed time of a known day, which was the morning of the Festival Day.
26:39
وَقِيلَ لِلنَّاسِ هَلْ أَنتُم مُّجْتَمِعُونَ
Pronunciation
Waqeela linnasi hal antummujtamiAAoon
Translation
And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it was said to the people, ‘Will you assemble!’
26:40
لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ السَّحَرَةَ إِن كَانُوا هُمُ الْغَالِبِينَ
Pronunciation
LaAAallana nattabiAAu assaharatain kanoo humu alghalibeen
Translation
That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Maybe we will follow the sorcerers, should they be the victors’ (the interrogative [of the previous verse] is an incitement to assemble and the optative sense [implicit in la‘alla] is due to their anticipation of victory, and hence their continued adherence to their religion and rejection of Moses).
26:41
فَلَمَّا جَاءَ السَّحَرَةُ قَالُوا لِفِرْعَوْنَ أَئِنَّ لَنَا لَأَجْرًا إِن كُنَّا نَحْنُ الْغَالِبِينَ
Pronunciation
Falamma jaa assaharatuqaloo lifirAAawna a-inna lana laajran in kunnanahnu alghalibeen
Translation
And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So when the sorcerers came, they said to Pharaoh, ‘Shall we indeed (read a-inna either by pronouncing both hamzas, or by not pronouncing the second, but in both cases inserting an alif) have a reward if we were to be the victors?’
26:42
قَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّكُمْ إِذًا لَّمِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala naAAam wa-innakum ithanlamina almuqarrabeen
Translation
He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘Yes [of course]! And you shall then be among those closest [to me]’.
26:43
قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ أَلْقُوا مَا أَنتُم مُّلْقُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala lahum moosa alqoo maantum mulqoon
Translation
Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Moses said to them, after they had said to him, Either you cast, or we shall be the casters [Q. 7:115]: ‘Cast what you have to cast’ — the command to do this signifies an authorisation for them to cast and a means whereby the truth will be made to prevail.
26:44
فَأَلْقَوْا حِبَالَهُمْ وَعِصِيَّهُمْ وَقَالُوا بِعِزَّةِ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّا لَنَحْنُ الْغَالِبُونَ
Pronunciation
Faalqaw hibalahum waAAisiyyahumwaqaloo biAAizzati firAAawna inna lanahnualghaliboon
Translation
So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So they cast their ropes and their staffs, and said, ‘By the power of Pharaoh we shall surely be the victors!’
26:45
فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
Pronunciation
Faalqa moosa AAasahufa-itha hiya talqafu ma ya/fikoon
Translation
Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Thereat Moses cast his staff and lo! it was swallowing (talqafu: one of the original two tā’ letters [of taltaqifu] has been assimilated) what they had faked, [what they had] transformed through illusion, making their ropes and staffs appear to be moving serpents.
26:46
فَأُلْقِيَ السَّحَرَةُ سَاجِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Faolqiya assaharatu sajideen
Translation
So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allah].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So the sorcerers fell down prostrating.
26:47
قَالُوا آمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo amanna birabbialAAalameen
Translation
They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,
26:48
رَبِّ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ
Pronunciation
Rabbi moosa waharoon
Translation
The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
the Lord of Moses and Aaron’, for they realised that what they had witnessed in the case of the staff could not have been the result of [mere] sorcery.
26:49
قَالَ آمَنتُمْ لَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ آذَنَ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُ لَكَبِيرُكُمُ الَّذِي عَلَّمَكُمُ السِّحْرَ فَلَسَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ ۚ لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ أَيْدِيَكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُم مِّنْ خِلَافٍ وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala amantum lahu qabla an athanalakum innahu lakabeerukumu allathee AAallamakumu assihrafalasawfa taAAlamoona laoqattiAAanna aydiyakum waarjulakummin khilafin walaosallibannakum ajmaAAeen
Translation
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed Moses before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Pharaoh said, ‘Do you believe (a-āmantum, read pronouncing both hamzas or replacing the second one with an alif) him, Moses, though I have not given you leave? He is indeed your chief, the one who has taught you sorcery — so that he only taught you some [tricks] and then surpassed you with others. Soon you will know, what I will do with you! I will assuredly cut off your hands and legs on opposite sides — in other words, the right hand of each one together with his left leg — then I shall surely crucify you all.’
26:50
قَالُوا لَا ضَيْرَ ۖ إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا مُنقَلِبُونَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo la dayra innaila rabbina munqaliboon
Translation
They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘There is no harm [in that], no damage will be done to us thereby. Surely to our Lord, after we die, whichever way that may be, we shall return, in the Hereafter.
26:51
إِنَّا نَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطَايَانَا أَن كُنَّا أَوَّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna natmaAAu an yaghfira lanarabbuna khatayana an kunnaawwala almu/mineen
Translation
Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed We hope our Lord will forgive us our iniquities, for being the first to believe’, in our time.
26:52
وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي إِنَّكُم مُّتَّبَعُونَ
Pronunciation
Waawhayna ila moosaan asri biAAibadee innakum muttabaAAoon
Translation
And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We revealed to Moses, after many years which he spent among them calling them to the truth with God’s signs but all of which only increased them in insolence, [saying], ‘Journey with My servants, the Children of Israel, by night (a variant reading [for an asri] is an isr, from the verb sarā, one form of asrā) go with them by night in the direction of the sea, for indeed you will be pursued’. Pharaoh and his armies will pursue you, but when they enter the sea in pursuit of you, I will deliver you and drown them.
26:53
فَأَرْسَلَ فِرْعَوْنُ فِي الْمَدَائِنِ حَاشِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Faarsala firAAawnu fee almada-ini hashireen
Translation
Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then Pharaoh, having been informed of their night departure, sent to the cities — it is said that he ruled a thousand cities and twelve thousand villages — musterers, to assemble the army, saying:
26:54
إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَشِرْذِمَةٌ قَلِيلُونَ
Pronunciation
Inna haola-i lashirthimatunqaleeloon
Translation
[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
‘Lo! these are but a small gang. It is said that they [the Children of Israel] numbered 670,000, while his [Pharaoh’s] vanguard alone numbered 700,000 and so he deemed their number insignificant in comparison to his huge army.
26:55
وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَائِظُونَ
Pronunciation
Wa-innahum lana lagha-ithoon
Translation
And indeed, they are enraging us,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed they have enraged us, their actions infuriate us,
26:56
وَإِنَّا لَجَمِيعٌ حَاذِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna lajameeAAun hathiroon
Translation
And indeed, we are a cautious society... "
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and indeed we are all on our guard’, ready (a variant reading [for hadhirūna] has hādhirūn, meaning ‘alert’).
26:57
فَأَخْرَجْنَاهُم مِّن جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
Pronunciation
Faakhrajnahum min jannatinwaAAuyoon
Translation
So We removed them from gardens and springs
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
God, exalted be He, says: So We made them, Pharaoh and his folk, go forth, out of Egypt, in order to pursue Moses and his people, from gardens, orchards on either side of the Nile, and springs, streams running from the Nile through their dwellings,
26:58
وَكُنُوزٍ وَمَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wakunoozin wamaqamin kareem
Translation
And treasures and honorable station -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and treasures, visible riches of gold and silver — these [riches] are called kunūz [as opposed to amwāl, ‘riches’] because that [portion] which is [always] due to God, exalted be He, from them had not been paid — and splendid places, exquisite residences for princes and ministers surrounded by their retinues.
26:59
كَذَٰلِكَ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
Pronunciation
Kathalika waawrathnahabanee isra-eel
Translation
Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So [it was], that is, Our expulsion [of them] was as We have described, and We made the Children of Israel to inherit these, after drowning Pharaoh and his folk.
26:60
فَأَتْبَعُوهُم مُّشْرِقِينَ
Pronunciation
FaatbaAAoohum mushriqeen
Translation
So they pursued them at sunrise.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then they pursued them, they caught them up, at sunrise.
26:61
فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَى الْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَابُ مُوسَىٰ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ
Pronunciation
Falamma taraa aljamAAaniqala as-habu moosa innalamudrakoon
Translation
And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And when the two hosts sighted each other, the companions of Moses said, ‘We have been caught!’, Pharaoh’s hosts have caught us up and we have no power against them.
26:62
قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ
Pronunciation
Qala kalla inna maAAiya rabbeesayahdeen
Translation
[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Moses, said, ‘Certainly not!, they shall not catch us up; indeed I have my Lord with me, to provide assistance. He will guide me’, to the route of deliverance.
26:63
فَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ اضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ الْبَحْرَ ۖ فَانفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَالطَّوْدِ الْعَظِيمِ
Pronunciation
Faawhayna ila moosaani idrib biAAasaka albahra fanfalaqafakana kullu firqin kattawdi alAAatheem
Translation
Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
God, exalted be He, says: Thereupon We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your staff’, and he struck it, whereupon it parted, it split into twelve parts, and each part was as a mighty mountain, between each of these parts were paths which they followed, such that not even the saddles or the felts of the riders were touched by water.
26:64
وَأَزْلَفْنَا ثَمَّ الْآخَرِينَ
Pronunciation
Waazlafna thamma al-akhareen
Translation
And We advanced thereto the pursuers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And there We brought near the others, Pharaoh and his folk, until they followed them across the same paths.
26:65
وَأَنجَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Waanjayna moosa waman maAAahuajmaAAeen
Translation
And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We delivered Moses and all those who were with him, by bringing them out of the sea while it was in the state mentioned [above].
26:66
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا الْآخَرِينَ
Pronunciation
Thumma aghraqna al-akhareen
Translation
Then We drowned the others.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then We drowned the others, Pharaoh and his folk by closing the sea on them after they had entered the sea and the Children of Israel had exited therefrom.
26:67
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely in that, drowning of Pharaoh and his folk, there is a sign, a lesson for those [generations] who would come after them; but most of them are not believers, in God. The only ones to believe were Āsiya — Pharaoh’s wife — Hizqīl, the believing man of Pharaoh’s family, and Maryam daughter of Nāmūsī, she who pointed out the bone remains of [the prophet] Joseph, peace be upon him.
26:68
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And surely your Lord, He is the Mighty, for He wrought vengeance upon the disbelievers by drowning them, the Merciful, to believers, delivering them from drowning.
26:69
وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
Pronunciation
Watlu AAalayhim nabaa ibraheem
Translation
And recite to them the news of Abraham,

And recite to them, the disbelievers of Mecca, the tiding, the tale, of Abraham (Ibrāhīma is substituted by [the following, idh qāla, ‘when he said’])
26:70
إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ
Pronunciation
Ith qala li-abeehi waqawmihi mataAAbudoon
Translation
When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
when he said to his father and his people, ‘What do you worship?’
26:71
قَالُوا نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَاكِفِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo naAAbudu asnamanfanathallu laha AAakifeen
Translation
They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘We worship idols — they reiterate the verb [in the response] in order to supplement it with [the following remark] — and remain cleaving to them’, we remain worshipping them all day; they give a longer response to indicate their [misplaced] pride in such [an act].
26:72
قَالَ هَلْ يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ إِذْ تَدْعُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala hal yasmaAAoonakum ithtadAAoon
Translation
He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘Do they hear you when you supplicate?
26:73
أَوْ يَنفَعُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَضُرُّونَ
Pronunciation
Aw yanfaAAoonakum aw yadurroon
Translation
Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Or do they bring you benefit, when you worship them, or harm?, to you, if you do not?
26:74
قَالُوا بَلْ وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا كَذَٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo bal wajadna abaanakathalika yafAAaloon
Translation
They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Rather, we found our fathers so doing’, that is, doing the same as we do.
26:75
قَالَ أَفَرَأَيْتُم مَّا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala afaraaytum ma kuntumtaAAbudoon
Translation
He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

He said, ‘Have you considered what you have been worshipping,
26:76
أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمُ الْأَقْدَمُونَ
Pronunciation
Antum waabaokumu al-aqdamoon
Translation
You and your ancient forefathers?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
you and your ancestors?
26:77
فَإِنَّهُمْ عَدُوٌّ لِّي إِلَّا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Fa-innahum AAaduwwun lee illa rabbaalAAalameen
Translation
Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They are indeed hateful to me, I do not worship them; but the Lord of the Worlds, I do worship Him,
26:78
الَّذِي خَلَقَنِي فَهُوَ يَهْدِينِ
Pronunciation
Allathee khalaqanee fahuwa yahdeen
Translation
Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[He] Who created me, it is He Who guides me, to [the proper] religion,
26:79
وَالَّذِي هُوَ يُطْعِمُنِي وَيَسْقِينِ
Pronunciation
Wallathee huwa yutAAimuneewayasqeen
Translation
And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and provides me with food and drink,
26:80
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha maridtu fahuwayashfeen
Translation
And when I am ill, it is He who cures me
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and when I am sick, it is He Who cures me;
26:81
وَالَّذِي يُمِيتُنِي ثُمَّ يُحْيِينِ
Pronunciation
Wallathee yumeetunee thummayuhyeen
Translation
And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and Who will make me die, then give me life,
26:82
وَالَّذِي أَطْمَعُ أَن يَغْفِرَ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
Pronunciation
Wallathee atmaAAu anyaghfira lee khatee-atee yawma addeen
Translation
And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and Who, I hope, will forgive me my iniquity on the Day of Judgement, [the Day] of Requital.
26:83
رَبِّ هَبْ لِي حُكْمًا وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالصَّالِحِينَ
Pronunciation
Rabbi hab lee hukman waalhiqneebissaliheen
Translation
[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
My Lord! Grant me [unerring] judgement, knowledge, and unite me with the righteous, the prophets.
26:84
وَاجْعَل لِّي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الْآخِرِينَ
Pronunciation
WajAAal lee lisana sidqinfee al-akhireen
Translation
And grant me a reputation of honor among later generations.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And confer on me a worthy repute, excellent praise, among posterity, those who will come after me up to the Day of Resurrection.
26:85
وَاجْعَلْنِي مِن وَرَثَةِ جَنَّةِ النَّعِيمِ
Pronunciation
WajAAalnee min warathati jannati annaAAeem
Translation
And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And make me among the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss, among those who will be given it.
26:86
وَاغْفِرْ لِأَبِي إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ
Pronunciation
Waghfir li-abee innahu kanamina addalleen
Translation
And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And forgive my father, for indeed he is one of those who are astray, by Your relenting to him and forgiving him: this was before it became clear to him [Abraham] that he [his father] was an enemy of God, as mentioned in sūrat Barā’a [Q. 9:114].
26:87
وَلَا تُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ
Pronunciation
Wala tukhzinee yawma yubAAathoon
Translation
And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And do not disgrace me, do not expose me, on the day when they, mankind, are resurrected;
26:88
يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ
Pronunciation
Yawma la yanfaAAu malun walabanoon
Translation
The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
of which [day] God, exalted be He, says [the following]: the day when neither wealth nor children will avail, anyone,
26:89
إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Illa man ata Allahabiqalbin saleem
Translation
But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except him who comes to God with a heart that is sound, [free] from idolatry and hypocrisy — and this is the heart of the believer, whom such [things] will avail.
26:90
وَأُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
Pronunciation
Waozlifati aljannatu lilmuttaqeen
Translation
And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And Paradise will be brought near for the God-fearing, and they will [be able to] see it,
26:91
وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِلْغَاوِينَ
Pronunciation
Waburrizati aljaheemu lilghaween
Translation
And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

and Hell will be revealed [plainly] for the perverse, the disbelievers.
26:92
وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ
Pronunciation
Waqeela lahum ayna ma kuntumtaAAbudoon
Translation
And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it will be said to them, ‘Where is that which you used to worship
26:93
مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ هَلْ يَنصُرُونَكُمْ أَوْ يَنتَصِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Min dooni Allahi hal yansuroonakumaw yantasiroon
Translation
Other than Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
besides God?, that is, other than Him, in the way of idols. Do they help you, by averting from you the chastisement, or do they help one another?’, by averting it from themselves? No [neither]!
26:94
فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا هُمْ وَالْغَاوُونَ
Pronunciation
Fakubkiboo feeha hum walghawoon
Translation
So they will be overturned into Hellfire, they and the deviators
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then they will be hurled, cast, into it, they and the perverse,
26:95
وَجُنُودُ إِبْلِيسَ أَجْمَعُونَ
Pronunciation
Wajunoodu ibleesa ajmaAAoon
Translation
And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and the hosts of Iblīs, his followers and those jinn and humans who were obedient to him, all together.
26:96
قَالُوا وَهُمْ فِيهَا يَخْتَصِمُونَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo wahum feeha yakhtasimoon
Translation
They will say while they dispute therein,

They, the perverse, shall say, as they wrangle therein, with those whom they used to worship:
26:97
تَاللَّهِ إِن كُنَّا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ
Pronunciation
Tallahi in kunna lafeedalalin mubeen
Translation
"By Allah, we were indeed in manifest error
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
‘By God, we had indeed (in, softened in place of the hardened form, with its subject omitted, in other words [it would usually be] innahu) been in manifest error,
26:98
إِذْ نُسَوِّيكُم بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Ith nusawweekum birabbi alAAalameen
Translation
When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
when we equated you, in worship, with the Lord of the Worlds.
26:99
وَمَا أَضَلَّنَا إِلَّا الْمُجْرِمُونَ
Pronunciation
Wama adallana illaalmujrimoon
Translation
And no one misguided us except the criminals.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it was none other than the sinners, the devils or our predecessors, whose example we were following, that led us astray, from guidance.
26:100
فَمَا لَنَا مِن شَافِعِينَ
Pronunciation
Fama lana min shafiAAeen
Translation
So now we have no intercessors
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So [now] we have no intercessors, as the believers have, in the way of angels, prophets and [other] believers,
26:101
وَلَا صَدِيقٍ حَمِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wala sadeeqin hameem
Translation
And not a devoted friend.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
nor any sympathetic friend, who might be concerned for us.
26:102
فَلَوْ أَنَّ لَنَا كَرَّةً فَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Falaw anna lana karratan fanakoonamina almu/mineen
Translation
Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers... "
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
If only we had another turn, [another] return to this world, we would have been among those who believe!’ (law, ‘if only’, here is for [the conditional] optative, to which nakūna, ‘we would have been’, constitutes the response).
26:103
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely in that, which is mentioned of the tale of Abraham and his people, there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
26:104
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And truly your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
26:105
كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Pronunciation
Kaththabat qawmu noohinalmursaleen
Translation
The people of Noah denied the messengers
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
The people of Noah denied the messengers, by denying him, for they all brought the same message affirming God’s Oneness; or [it is] because he stayed among them for so long that it was as though he was many messengers (the feminine [person of the verb kadhdhabat, ‘denied’, governed by] qawm, ‘the people’, is on account of the import, but it is masculine on account of its [morphological] form);
26:106
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ نُوحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
Pronunciation
Ith qala lahum akhoohum noohunala tattaqoon
Translation
When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allah ?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
when Noah, their brother — [their brother only] in terms of lineage — said to them, ‘Will you not fear?, God?
26:107
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
Pronunciation
Innee lakum rasoolun ameen
Translation
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly I am a trusted messenger [sent] to you, to deliver the Message with which I have been sent.
26:108
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Pronunciation
Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon
Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So fear God and obey me, in what I enjoin you to of God’s Oneness and obedience to Him.
26:109
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen
Translation
And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
I do not ask of you any reward for it, for delivering it; for my reward lies only with the Lord of the Worlds.
26:110
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Pronunciation
Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon
Translation
So fear Allah and obey me."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So fear God and obey me’ — he repeats this [statement] for emphasis.
26:111
قَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ لَكَ وَاتَّبَعَكَ الْأَرْذَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo anu/minu laka wattabaAAakaal-arthaloon
Translation
They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Shall we believe in you, in your words, when it is the lowliest people who follow you?’ (wa’ttaba‘aka: a variant reading has wa-atbā‘uka, ‘[when] your followers’, plural of tābi‘, ‘follower’, as a subject) the riffraff, such as the weavers and the shoemakers.
26:112
قَالَ وَمَا عِلْمِي بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala wama AAilmee bimakanoo yaAAmaloon
Translation
He said, "And what is my knowledge of what they used to do?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘And what do I know of what they may have been doing?
26:113
إِنْ حِسَابُهُمْ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّي ۖ لَوْ تَشْعُرُونَ
Pronunciation
In hisabuhum illa AAalarabbee law tashAAuroon
Translation
Their account is only upon my Lord, if you [could] perceive.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Their reckoning is only my Lord’s concern, and He will requite them, if only you were aware — had you known this, you would not have reviled them.
26:114
وَمَا أَنَا بِطَارِدِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama ana bitaridialmu/mineen
Translation
And I am not one to drive away the believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And I am not about to drive away the believers.
26:115
إِنْ أَنَا إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
Pronunciation
In ana illa natheerunmubeen
Translation
I am only a clear warner."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
I am just a plain warner’.
26:116
قَالُوا لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَا نُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمَرْجُومِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo la-in lam tantahi yanoohu latakoonanna mina almarjoomeen
Translation
They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Lo! if you do not desist, O Noah, from what you say to us, you will assuredly be among those assailed’, with stones or curses.
26:117
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي كَذَّبُونِ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbi inna qawmee kaththaboon
Translation
He said, "My Lord, indeed my people have denied me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Noah, said, ‘My Lord, my people have denied me,
26:118
فَافْتَحْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُمْ فَتْحًا وَنَجِّنِي وَمَن مَّعِيَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Faftah baynee wabaynahum fathanwanajjinee waman maAAiya mina almu/mineen
Translation
Then judge between me and them with decisive judgement and save me and those with me of the believers."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
so judge conclusively between me and them, and deliver me and the believers who are with me’.
26:119
فَأَنجَيْنَاهُ وَمَن مَّعَهُ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ
Pronunciation
Faanjaynahu waman maAAahu feealfulki almashhoon
Translation
So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, exalted be He, says: So We delivered him and those who were with him in the laden ark, [the ship] filled with humans, animals and birds.
26:120
ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا بَعْدُ الْبَاقِينَ
Pronunciation
Thumma aghraqna baAAdu albaqeen
Translation
Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then afterwards, after We delivered them, We drowned the rest, of his people.
26:121
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
26:122
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
26:123
كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Pronunciation
Kaththabat AAadun almursaleen
Translation
'Aad denied the messengers

‘Ād denied the messengers,
26:124
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ هُودٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
Pronunciation
Ith qala lahum akhoohumhoodun ala tattaqoon
Translation
When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah ?

when Hūd, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
26:125
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
Pronunciation
Innee lakum rasoolun ameen
Translation
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly I am a trusted messenger [sent] to you.
26:126
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Pronunciation
Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon
Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So fear God and obey me.
26:127

أَتَبْنُونَ بِكُلِّ رِيعٍ آيَةً تَعْبَثُونَ
Pronunciation
Atabnoona bikulli reeAAin ayatantaAAbathoon
Translation
Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Do you build on every prominence, every high place, a monument, an edifice as a signpost for passers-by, so that you may hurl abuse?, at those who pass by you and deride them (ta‘bathūna, is a circumstantial qualifier referring to the subject of [the verb] tabnūna, ‘you build’).
26:129
وَتَتَّخِذُونَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَخْلُدُونَ
Pronunciation
Watattakhithoona masaniAAalaAAallakum takhludoon
Translation
And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And you set up structures, for [extracting] water underground, that perhaps you might, as though you will, last forever, therein and not die.
26:130
وَإِذَا بَطَشْتُم بَطَشْتُمْ جَبَّارِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha batashtum batashtumjabbareen
Translation
And when you strike, you strike as tyrants.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And when you assault, to smite or slay, you assault like tyrants, mercilessly!
26:131
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Pronunciation
Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon
Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So fear God, in this, and obey me, in what I have commanded you.
26:132
وَاتَّقُوا الَّذِي أَمَدَّكُم بِمَا تَعْلَمُونَ
Pronunciation
Wattaqoo allathee amaddakumbima taAAlamoon
Translation
And fear He who provided you with that which you know,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And fear Him Who has provided you, Who has been gracious to you, in a way that you know,
26:133
أَمَدَّكُم بِأَنْعَامٍ وَبَنِينَ
Pronunciation
Amaddakum bi-anAAamin wabaneen
Translation
Provided you with grazing livestock and children
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
provided you with cattle and sons,
26:134
وَجَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
Pronunciation
Wajannatin waAAuyoon
Translation
And gardens and springs.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and gardens, orchards, and springs, rivers.
26:135
إِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Innee akhafu AAalaykum AAathabayawmin AAatheem
Translation
Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed I fear for you the chastisement of a tremendous day’, in this world and in the Hereafter should you disobey me.
26:136
قَالُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْنَا أَوَعَظْتَ أَمْ لَمْ تَكُن مِّنَ الْوَاعِظِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo sawaon AAalaynaawaAAathta am lam takun mina alwaAAitheen
Translation
They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘It is the same to us whether you admonish [us] or are not one of those who admonish, anyway. In other words, we will not heed your admonition.
26:137
إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا خُلُقُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
In hatha illa khuluqual-awwaleen
Translation
This is not but the custom of the former peoples,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
This, that you threaten us with, is merely the fabrication of the ancients, that is, their inventions and lies (a variant reading [for khalq, ‘fabrication’] is khuluq, ‘ethos’, in other words, this denial of resurrection to which we adhere is merely ‘the ethos of the ancients’, in other words, their nature and wont);
26:138
وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama nahnu bimuAAaththabeen
Translation
And we are not to be punished."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and we will not be chastised’.
26:139
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Fakaththaboohu faahlaknahuminna fee thalika laayatan wama kanaaktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So they denied him, concerning the chastisement, whereupon We destroyed them, in this world with the [barren] wind [cf. Q. 51:41]. Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
26:140
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

Truly your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
26:141
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ الْمُرْسَلِينَ

Thamud denied the messengers

26:142
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ صَالِحٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
Pronunciation
Ith qala lahum akhoohum salihunala tattaqoon
Translation
When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah ?

when Sālih, their brother, said to them, ‘Will you fear God?
26:143
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ

Translation

Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death],

Will you be left secure in that which is here, of good things —
26:147
فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
Pronunciation
Fee jannatin waAAuyoon
Translation
Within gardens and springs
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
amid gardens and springs,
26:148
وَزُرُوعٍ وَنَخْلٍ طَلْعُهَا هَضِيمٌ
Pronunciation
WazurooAAin wanakhlin talAAuhahadeem
Translation
And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and farms and date palms with slender, delicate and tender, spathes?
26:149
وَتَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا فَارِهِينَ
Pronunciation
Watanhitoona mina aljibalibuyootan fariheen
Translation
And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And you hew dwellings out of the mountains arrogantly (a variant reading [of farihīna, ‘arrogant’] has fārihīn, ‘skilfully’).
26:150
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Pronunciation
Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon
Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So fear God and obey me, in what I have commanded you,
26:151
وَلَا تُطِيعُوا أَمْرَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
Pronunciation
Wala tuteeAAoo amraalmusrifeen
Translation
And do not obey the order of the transgressors,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and do not obey the command of the prodigal,
26:152
الَّذِينَ يُفْسِدُونَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
Pronunciation
Allatheena yufsidoona fee al-ardiwala yuslihoon
Translation
Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
who cause corruption in the earth, through acts of disobedience, and act righteously’, by being obedient to God.
26:153
قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareen
Translation
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘You are indeed one of the bewitched, those who have succumbed so many times to sorcery that their minds have been overcome.
26:154
مَا أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِآيَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
Pronunciation
Ma anta illa basharun mithlunafa/ti bi-ayatin in kunta mina assadiqeena
Translation
You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And, moreover, you are just a human being like us. So bring [us] a sign, if you are sincere’, in your Mission.
26:155
قَالَ هَٰذِهِ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
Pronunciation
Qala hathihi naqatunlaha shirbun walakum shirbu yawmin maAAloom
Translation
He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘This is a she-camel; she shall drink, a share of the water, and you shall drink [each] on a known day.
26:156
وَلَا تَمَسُّوهَا بِسُوءٍ فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wala tamassooha bisoo-infaya/khuthakum AAathabu yawmin AAatheem
Translation
And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And do not cause her any harm, for then you shall be seized by the chastisement of an awful day’, [awful] because of the awfulness of the chastisement.
26:157
فَعَقَرُوهَا فَأَصْبَحُوا نَادِمِينَ
Pronunciation
FaAAaqarooha faasbahoonadimeen
Translation
But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But they hamstrung her — a group of them hamstrung her with the approval of others; and then became remorseful, for having hamstrung it.
26:158
فَأَخَذَهُمُ الْعَذَابُ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Faakhathahumu alAAathabu innafee thalika laayatan wama kanaaktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

So they were seized by the chastisement, which had been promised and were destroyed. Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
26:159
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ أَخُوهُمْ لُوطٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ

Ith qala lahum akhoohum lootunala tattaqoon
Translation
When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allah ?

26:162

أَتَأْتُونَ الذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Ata/toona aththukranamina alAAalameen
Translation
Do you approach males among the worlds
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
What! Of all people you come unto males [to fornicate],
26:166
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّنْ أَزْوَاجِكُم ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ
Pronunciation
Watatharoona ma khalaqa lakumrabbukum min azwajikum bal antum qawmun AAadoon
Translation
And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and forsake the wives your Lord has created for you?, in other words, [you forsake intimacy with] their front parts? Nay, but you are a transgressing folk’, overstepping [the bounds of] what is lawful into what is unlawful.
26:167
قَالُوا لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَا لُوطُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُخْرَجِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo la-in lam tantahi yalootu latakoonanna mina almukhrajeen
Translation
They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘If you do not desist, O Lot, from reproaching us, you will assuredly be of those expelled’, from our land.
26:168
قَالَ إِنِّي لِعَمَلِكُم مِّنَ الْقَالِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala innee liAAamalikum mina alqaleen
Translation
He said, "Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Lot, said, ‘Truly I abhor, I detest, what you do.
26:169
رَبِّ نَجِّنِي وَأَهْلِي مِمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Rabbi najjinee waahlee mimmayaAAmaloon
Translation
My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
My Lord, deliver me and my family from what they do’, that is, from the punishment for it.
26:170
فَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Fanajjaynahu waahlahu ajmaAAeen
Translation
So We saved him and his family, all,

So We delivered him and all his family,
26:171
إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِي الْغَابِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Illa AAajoozan fee alghabireen
Translation
Except an old woman among those who remained behind.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except an old woman — his wife — among those who stayed behind, whom We destroyed.
26:172
ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا الْآخَرِينَ
Pronunciation
Thumma dammarna al-akhareen
Translation
Then We destroyed the others.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then We destroyed [all] the others,
26:173
وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّطَرًا ۖ فَسَاءَ مَطَرُ الْمُنذَرِينَ
Pronunciation
Waamtarna AAalayhim mataranfasaa mataru almunthareen
Translation
And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and We rained on them a rain, [We rained on them] stones — this [detail] pertains to [the previous] statement concerning their destruction — and evil was, their rain, the rain of those who were warned!
26:174
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
26:175
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
26:176
كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Pronunciation
Kaththaba as-habual-aykati almursaleen
Translation
The companions of the thicket denied the messengers
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
The dwellers in the wood (a variant reading [for ashābu’l-aykati] has ashābu laykata), a thicket of trees near Midian, denied the messengers,
26:177
إِذْ قَالَ لَهُمْ شُعَيْبٌ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ
Pronunciation
Ith qala lahum shuAAaybun alatattaqoon
Translation
When Shu'ayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allah?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
when Shu‘ayb — He [God] does not say ‘their brother’ [in this instance] because he [Shu‘ayb] was not [in terms of lineage] one of them — said to them, ‘Will you not fear God?
26:178
إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ
Pronunciation
Innee lakum rasoolun ameen
Translation
Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly I am a trusted messenger [sent] to you.
26:179
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُونِ
Pronunciation
Fattaqoo Allaha waateeAAoon
Translation
So fear Allah and obey me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So fear God and obey me.
26:180
وَمَا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أَجْرٍ ۖ إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama as-alukum AAalayhi min ajrin inajriya illa AAala rabbi alAAalameen
Translation
And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
I do not ask of you any reward for this; indeed my reward lies only with the Lord of the Worlds.
26:181
أَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُخْسِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Awfoo alkayla wala takoonoo minaalmukhsireen
Translation
Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Give full measure and do not be of those who give short measure,
26:182
وَزِنُوا بِالْقِسْطَاسِ الْمُسْتَقِيمِ
Pronunciation
Wazinoo bilqistasialmustaqeem
Translation
And weigh with an even balance.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and weigh with an even balance,
26:183
وَلَا تَبْخَسُوا النَّاسَ أَشْيَاءَهُمْ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِي الْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Wala tabkhasoo annasaashyaahum wala taAAthaw fee al-ardimufsideen
Translation
And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and do not defraud people in their goods, do not diminish anything of what is due to them, and do not be degenerate in the earth, seeking corruption, by killing or otherwise ([ta‘thaw, ‘degenerate’] derives from ‘athiya, meaning afsada, ‘to corrupt’; mufsidīna, ‘seeking corruption’, is a circumstantial qualifier emphasising the import of its operator [ta‘thaw]).
26:184
وَاتَّقُوا الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالْجِبِلَّةَ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Wattaqoo allathee khalaqakumwaljibillata al-awwaleen
Translation
And fear He who created you and the former creation."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And fear Him Who created you and the former generations’, [all] creation [before you].
26:185
قَالُوا إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مِنَ الْمُسَحَّرِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo innama anta mina almusahhareen
Translation
They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘You are indeed one of the bewitched.
26:186
وَمَا أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا وَإِن نَّظُنُّكَ لَمِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama anta illa basharunmithluna wa-in nathunnuka lamina alkathibeen
Translation
You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
You are just a human being like us. And we indeed (in, softened in place of the hardened form, its subject omitted, in other words [it would be] innahu) think that you are one of the liars.
26:187
فَأَسْقِطْ عَلَيْنَا كِسَفًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
Pronunciation
Faasqit AAalayna kisafan minaassama-i in kunta mina assadiqeen
Translation
So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then make fragments (read kisfan or kisafan) of the heaven fall upon us, if you are of the truthful’, in your Mission.
26:188
قَالَ رَبِّي أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbee aAAlamu bimataAAmaloon
Translation
He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘My Lord knows best what you are doing’, and will requite you for it.
26:189
فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Fakaththaboohu faakhathahumAAathabu yawmi aththullati innahu kanaAAathaba yawmin AAatheem
Translation
And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But they denied him, so they were seized by the chastisement of the day of the shade (al-zulla) — a cloud which gave them shade when they suffered a bout of extreme heat but which then rained down fire on them and they were incinerated. Assuredly it was the chastisement of a tremendous day.
26:190
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatan wamakana aktharuhum mu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely in that there is a sign; but most of them are not believers.
26:191
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka lahuwa alAAazeezu arraheem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Surely your Lord, He is the Mighty, the Merciful.
26:192
وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-innahu latanzeelu rabbi alAAalameen
Translation
And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly it, the Qur’ān, is the revelation of the Lord of the Worlds,
26:193
نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ
Pronunciation
Nazala bihi arroohu al-ameen
Translation
The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
brought down by the Trustworthy Spirit, Gabriel,
26:194
عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ
Pronunciation
AAala qalbika litakoona mina almunthireen
Translation
Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
upon your heart, that you may be [one] of the warners,
26:195
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُّبِينٍ
Pronunciation
Bilisanin AAarabiyyin mubeen
Translation
In a clear Arabic language.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
in a clear Arabic tongue (a variant reading [for nazala, ‘he brought down’, verse 193] has nuzzila, ‘was sent down’, and al-rūha, ‘the Spirit’, in the accusative, the subject of the verb being God).
26:196
وَإِنَّهُ لَفِي زُبُرِ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-innahu lafee zuburi al-awwaleen
Translation
And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And truly it, the allusion to the Qur’ān [that would be] revealed to Muhammad (s), is in the Scriptures, the Books, of the ancients, such as the Torah and the Gospel.
26:197
أَوَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ آيَةً أَن يَعْلَمَهُ عُلَمَاءُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
Pronunciation
Awa lam yakun lahum ayatan anyaAAlamahu AAulamao banee isra-eel
Translation
And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Is it not a sign, of this fact, for them, for the disbelievers of Mecca, that the learned of the Children of Israel recognise it?, [those] such as ‘Abd Allāh b. Salām and his companions, from among those who became [Muslim] believers: they are able inform [you] of this (read yakun with āyatan in the accusative, or takun with āyatun in the nominative).
26:198
وَلَوْ نَزَّلْنَاهُ عَلَىٰ بَعْضِ الْأَعْجَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Walaw nazzalnahu AAala baAAdial-aAAjameen
Translation
And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
For had We revealed it to some non-Arabs (a‘jamūn is the plural of a‘jam),
26:199
فَقَرَأَهُ عَلَيْهِم مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Faqaraahu AAalayhim ma kanoobihi mu/mineen
Translation
And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and had he recited it to them, that is, [to] the disbelievers of Mecca, they would not have believed in it, disdaining to follow it.
26:200
كَذَٰلِكَ سَلَكْنَاهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Kathalika salaknahu feequloobi almujrimeen
Translation
Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So, in the same way in which We would have caused denial of it to penetrate [the hearts of disbelievers] had it been recited by a non-Arab, We have caused, denial of, it to penetrate the hearts of the criminals, the Meccan disbelievers, when Muhammad (s) recites it.
26:201
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ حَتَّىٰ يَرَوُا الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ
Pronunciation
La yu/minoona bihi hattayarawoo alAAathaba al-aleem
Translation
They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They will not believe in it until they behold the painful chastisement,
26:202
فَيَأْتِيَهُم بَغْتَةً وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Pronunciation
Faya/tiyahum baghtatan wahum layashAAuroon
Translation
And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
so that it will come upon them suddenly while they are not aware.
26:203
فَيَقُولُوا هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ
Pronunciation
Fayaqooloo hal nahnu muntharoon
Translation
And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Thereupon they will say, ‘Shall we be granted any respite?’, that we might become believers?; and it shall be said to them, ‘No!’, and they will say, ‘When will this chastisement be?’ God, exalted be He, says:
26:204
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ
Pronunciation
AfabiAAathabina yastaAAjiloon
Translation
So for Our punishment are they impatient?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So do they [seek to] hasten Our chastisement?
26:205
أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَاهُمْ سِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Afaraayta in mattaAAnahum sineen
Translation
Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Consider [this] then — inform Me: If We were to let them enjoy [life] for [many] years,
26:206
ثُمَّ جَاءَهُم مَّا كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
Pronunciation
Thumma jaahum ma kanooyooAAadoon
Translation
And then there came to them that which they were promised?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
then there were to come on them that which they have been promised, of chastisement,
26:207
مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يُمَتَّعُونَ
Pronunciation
Ma aghna AAanhum ma kanooyumattaAAoon
Translation
They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
in what way (mā here is interrogative) would that enjoyment which they were given avail them?, in averting the chastisement or mitigating it? It would be of no avail!
26:208
وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا لَهَا مُنذِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illalaha munthiroon
Translation
And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We have not destroyed any town but it had warners, messengers to warn its inhabitants;
26:209
ذِكْرَىٰ وَمَا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Thikra wama kunnathalimeen
Translation
As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
as a reminder, an admonition for them; for We were never unjust, for We destroy them [only] after they have been warned. The following was revealed to refute what the idolaters were saying:
26:210
وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ
Pronunciation
Wama tanazzalat bihi ashshayateen
Translation
And the devils have not brought the revelation down.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
It, the Qur’ān, has not been brought down by the devils.
26:211
وَمَا يَنبَغِي لَهُمْ وَمَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ
Pronunciation
Wama yanbaghee lahum wamayastateeAAoon
Translation
It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Neither would it behove, befit, them, to bring it down, nor are they capable, [of doing] that.
26:212
إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ السَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ
Pronunciation
Innahum AAani assamAAilamaAAzooloona
Translation
Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly they are barred, restrained with blazing stars, from the hearing, of the sayings of the angels.
26:213
فَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ فَتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُعَذَّبِينَ
Pronunciation
Fala tadAAu maAAa Allahi ilahanakhara fatakoona mina almuAAaththabeen
Translation
So do not invoke with Allah another deity and [thus] be among the punished.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So do not invoke any other god with God, lest you be among the chastised — if you were to do what they call you to.
26:214
وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ
Pronunciation
Waanthir AAasheerataka al-aqrabeen
Translation
And warn, [O Muhammad], your closest kindred.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And warn the nearest of your kinsfolk, namely, the Banū Hāshim and the Banū al-Muttalib: ‘He [the Prophet] warned them publicly …’, as reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
26:215
وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Wakhfid janahakalimani ittabaAAaka mina almu/mineen
Translation
And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And lower your wing, show your gentle side, to the believers, the affirmers of God’s Oneness, who follow you.
26:216
فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Fa-in AAasawka faqul innee baree-onmimma taAAmaloon
Translation
And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But if they, your kinsfolk, disobey you, say, to them: ‘I am absolved of what you do’, in worshipping [gods] other than God.
26:217
وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ
Pronunciation
Watawakkal AAala alAAazeezi arraheem
Translation
And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And put your trust (wa-tawakkal, or read fa-tawakkal, ‘then put your trust’) in the Mighty, the Merciful, God, in other words, entrust Him with all your affairs,
26:218
الَّذِي يَرَاكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
Pronunciation
Allathee yaraka heenataqoom
Translation
Who sees you when you arise
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Who sees you when you stand, for prayer,
26:219
وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِي السَّاجِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Wataqallubaka fee assajideen
Translation
And your movement among those who prostrate.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and your movements — in [performing] the [various] parts of prayer: standing, sitting, bowing and prostrating — among those who prostrate, those who perform the prayers.
26:220
إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ
Pronunciation
Innahu huwa assameeAAu alAAaleem
Translation
Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
26:221
هَلْ أُنَبِّئُكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَن تَنَزَّلُ الشَّيَاطِينُ
Pronunciation
Hal onabbi-okum AAala man tanazzaluashshayateen
Translation
Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Shall I inform you, O disbelievers of Mecca, upon whom the devils descend? (tanazzalu: one of the tā’ letters in the original [tatanazzalu] has been omitted).
26:222
تَنَزَّلُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ أَفَّاكٍ أَثِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Tanazzalu AAala kulli affakinatheem
Translation
They descend upon every sinful liar.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They descend upon every sinful, profligate, liar, such as Musaylama and other soothsayers.
26:223
يُلْقُونَ السَّمْعَ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ كَاذِبُونَ
Pronunciation
Yulqoona assamAAa waaktharuhum kathiboon
Translation
They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They, the devils, report the heard [sayings], what they hear from the angels [they report] to the soothsayers, but most of them are liars, adding much that is false to what they hear — this was [revealed] before the devils were barred from the heaven.
26:224
وَالشُّعَرَاءُ يَتَّبِعُهُمُ الْغَاوُونَ
Pronunciation
WashshuAAaraoyattabiAAuhumu alghawoon
Translation
And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
As for the poets, [only] the perverse follow them, in their poetry, propounding it and reciting it on their behalf to others; they are thus reprehensible.
26:225
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّهُمْ فِي كُلِّ وَادٍ يَهِيمُونَ
Pronunciation
Alam tara annahum fee kulli wadinyaheemoon
Translation
Do you not see that in every valley they roam
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have you not noticed that — are you not aware that — in every valley, of the valleys of rhetoric and the art thereof, they rove, overstepping the bounds [of decency] in [their] eulogies and diatribes,
26:226
وَأَنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ مَا لَا يَفْعَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Waannahum yaqooloona ma layafAAaloon
Translation
And that they say what they do not do? -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and that they say, we do, what they do not do?, in other words, that they lie.
26:227
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَذَكَرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَانتَصَرُوا مِن بَعْدِ مَا ظُلِمُوا ۗ وَسَيَعْلَمُ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا أَيَّ مُنقَلَبٍ يَنقَلِبُونَ
Pronunciation
Illa allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati wathakaroo Allahakatheeran wantasaroo min baAAdi ma thulimoowasayaAAlamu allatheena thalamoo ayyamunqalabin yanqaliboon
Translation
Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Save those, poets, who believe and perform righteous deeds and remember God frequently, in other words, [those whom] poetry does not distract from the remembrance [of God], and vindicate themselves, by lampooning the disbelievers, after they have been wronged, by the disbelievers’ reviling of them [as belonging] together with all believers — such [individuals] are not reprehensible. God, exalted be He, says: God does not like the utterance of evil words out loud, unless a person has been wronged [Q. 4:148]; He, exalted be He, also says: so whoever commits aggression against you, commit aggression against him in the manner that he committed against you [Q. 2:194]; and those, poets and others, who are wrongdoers will soon know the reversal, the return, with which they will meet, [by which] they will return, after death.
