Surat
Ash-Sharĥ (The Relief) - سورة الشرح
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
[In the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY
MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]
أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ
لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
Pronunciation
Alam
nashrah laka sadrak
Translation
Did
We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Did
We not expand (an interrogative meant as an affirmative, in other words, ‘We
did [indeed] expand’) your breast for you, O Muhammad (s), by means of prophethood
and otherwise,
وَوَضَعْنَا
عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ
Pronunciation
WawadaAAna
AAanka wizrak
Translation
And
We removed from you your burden
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
relieve you of your burden,
الَّذِي أَنقَضَ
ظَهْرَكَ
Pronunciation
Allathee
anqada thahrak
Translation
Which
had weighed upon your back
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
that
which weighed down your back? — this is similar to where God says: that God may
forgive you what is past of your sin [Q. 48:2].
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ
ذِكْرَكَ
Pronunciation
WarafaAAna
laka thikrak
Translation
And
raised high for you your repute.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Did
We not exalt your mention? For you are mentioned where I [God] am mentioned in
the call announcing [the time for] prayer (adhān), in the [second] call to
perform the prayer (iqāma), in the witnessing [‘there is no god but God,
Muhammad is His Messenger’] (tashahhud), in the Friday sermon and in other
instances.
فَإِنَّ مَعَ
الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
Pronunciation
Fa-inna
maAAa alAAusri yusra
Translation
For
indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
For
truly with hardship comes ease.
إِنَّ مَعَ
الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
Pronunciation
Inna
maAAa alAAusri yusra
Translation
Indeed,
with hardship [will be] ease.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly
with hardship comes ease: the Prophet (s) suffered much hardship at the hands
of the disbelievers, but then he enjoyed ease when he was assisted to victory
[by God] over them.
فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ
فَانصَبْ
Pronunciation
Fa-itha
faraghta fansab
Translation
So
when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So
when you are finished, from [performing] prayer, toil, exert yourself in
supplication [to God],
وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ
فَارْغَب
Pronunciation
Wa-ila
rabbika farghab
Translation
And
to your Lord direct [your] longing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
seek, devote yourself humbly to, your Lord.
