Al-Muţaffifīn (The Defrauding) - سورة المطففين
[In
the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]
83:1
وَيْلٌ
لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
Pronunciation
Waylun
lilmutaffifeen
Translation
Woe
to those who give less [than due],
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Woe
(waylun: a term entailing chastisement; or [it is the name of] a valley in
Hell) to the defrauders:
الَّذِينَ إِذَا
اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
Pronunciation
Allatheena
itha iktalooAAala annasi yastawfoon
Translation
Who,
when they take a measure from people, take in full.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those
who, when they take measure from people, demand [it] in full, the measure;
وَإِذَا
كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha
kaloohum aw wazanoohumyukhsiroon
Translation
But
if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
but
[who] when they measure for them or weigh for them, they cause [them] loss,
they diminish [for them] the measure or the weight.
أَلَا يَظُنُّ
أُولَٰئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ
Pronunciation
Ala
yathunnu ola-ikaannahum mabAAoothoon
Translation
Do
they not think that they will be resurrected
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Do
such [individuals] not know for certain (alā indicates an interrogative of
rebuke) that they will be resurrected
لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Liyawmin
AAatheem
Translation
For
a tremendous Day -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
for
an awful day, that is to say, on it, and this is the Day of Resurrection,
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ
النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Yawma
yaqoomu annasu lirabbialAAalameen
Translation
The
Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
a
day when (yawma is a substitution for the [syntactical] locus of li-yawmin, ‘to
an [awful] day’, and as such is in the accusative because of [the verb]
mab‘ūthūna, ‘will be resurrected’) mankind will rise, from their graves, before
the Lord of the Worlds?, [the Lord of] all creatures, for His affair, His
reckoning and His requital.
كَلَّا إِنَّ
كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ
Pronunciation
Kalla
inna kitaba alfujjarilafee sijjeen
Translation
No!
Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay!,
verily, the record of the profligates, that is to say, the record of the deeds
of the disbelievers, is in Sijjīn — this is said to be a book containing [the
record of] all the deeds of the devils and the disbelievers; but it is also
said to be a location in the lowermost part of the seventh earth, the place of
Satan and his hosts.
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ
مَا سِجِّينٌ
Pronunciation
Wama
adraka ma sijjeen
Translation
And
what can make you know what is sijjeen?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And
what would tell you what Sijjīn is?, what the book of Sijjīn is.
كِتَابٌ
مَّرْقُومٌ
Pronunciation
Kitabun
marqoom
Translation
It
is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[It
is] a sealed book.
وَيْلٌ
يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Pronunciation
Waylun
yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen
Translation
Woe,
that Day, to the deniers,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Woe
to the deniers on that day,
الَّذِينَ
يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Pronunciation
Allatheena
yukaththiboonabiyawmi addeen
Translation
Who
deny the Day of Recompense.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
who
deny the Day of Judgement, [the Day of] Requital (alladhīna yukadhdhibūna
bi-yawmi’l-dīn: either a substitution for or an explication of
al-mukadhdhibīna, ‘the deniers’);
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ
بِهِ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wama
yukaththibu bihi illakullu muAAtadin atheem
Translation
And
none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
none deny it but every sinful (the form [athīm] is hyperbolic) transgressor,
overstepping the bounds.
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ
عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Itha
tutla AAalayhi ayatunaqala asateeru al-awwaleen
Translation
When
Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former
peoples."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
When
Our signs, [of] the Qur’ān, are recited to him, he says, ‘[Mere] fables
(asātīr) of the ancients!’, [mere] tales that were written down (sutirat) in
ancient times (asātīr is the plural of ustūra or istāra).
كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ
قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
Pronunciation
Kalla
bal rana AAalaquloobihim ma kanoo yaksiboon
Translation
No!
Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
No
indeed! — a deterrent and a warning against saying such [things]. Rather there
has slayed, engulfed, their hearts, covering them like rust that which they
earned, of acts of disobedience.
كَلَّا إِنَّهُمْ
عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ
Pronunciation
Kalla
innahum AAan rabbihim yawma-ithinlamahjooboon
Translation
No!
Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay!,
verily, they, on that day, the Day of Resurrection, will be screened off from
their Lord, and so they will not see Him.
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ
لَصَالُو الْجَحِيمِ
Pronunciation
Thumma
innahum lasaloo aljaheem
Translation
Then
indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then
they will be exposed to Hell-fire, [then] they will enter the scorching Fire;
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ
هَٰذَا الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Pronunciation
Thumma
yuqalu hatha allatheekuntum bihi tukaththiboon
Translation
Then
it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
then
it will be said, to them: ‘This, that is, the chastisement, is that which you
used to deny!’
كَلَّا إِنَّ
كِتَابَ الْأَبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ
Pronunciation
Kalla
inna kitaba al-abrarilafee AAilliyyeen
Translation
No!
Indeed, the record of the righteous is in 'illiyyun.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay!,
verily, the record of the pious, that is, the record of the deeds of the
believers who were sincere in their faith, is in ‘Illiyyūn — this is said to be
the book [containing] all the good deeds of the angels and the believers from
among the two heavy ones [sc. mankind and jinn]; but it is also said to be a
place below the Throne in the seventh heaven;
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ
مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
Pronunciation
Wama
adraka maAAilliyyoon
Translation
And
what can make you know what is 'illiyyun?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
what will tell you, [what will] inform you, what ‘Illiyyūn is?, what the book
of ‘Illiyyūn is.
كِتَابٌ
مَّرْقُومٌ
Pronunciation
Kitabun
marqoom
Translation
It
is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[It
is] a sealed book,
يَشْهَدُهُ
الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Pronunciation
Yashhaduhu
almuqarraboon
Translation
Which
is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
witnessed
by those brought near, from among the angels.
إِنَّ
الْأَبْرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Inna
al-abrara lafee naAAeem
Translation
Indeed,
the righteous will be in pleasure
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Assuredly
the pious will be amid bliss, [in] Paradise,
عَلَى
الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
Pronunciation
AAala
al-ara-iki yanthuroon
Translation
On
adorned couches, observing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
upon
couches, [upon] beds beneath canopies, gazing, at the bliss which they have
been given.
تَعْرِفُ فِي
وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّعِيمِ
Pronunciation
TaAArifu
fee wujoohihim nadrata annaAAeem
Translation
You
will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
You
will perceive in their faces the radiancy of bliss, the splendour and beauty of
blissfulness,
يُسْقَوْنَ مِن
رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ
Pronunciation
Yusqawna
min raheeqin makhtoom
Translation
They
will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
as
they are given to drink a nectar, a wine free of any impurities, [that is]
sealed, in its vessel, none other than them breaking its seal,
خِتَامُهُ مِسْكٌ
ۚ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ
الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ
Pronunciation
Khitamuhu
miskun wafee thalikafalyatanafasi almutanafisoon
Translation
The
last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
whose
seal is musk, that is, whose final sip is followed by an emanating scent of
musk — so for such [bliss] let the viers vie, let them desire to apply
themselves to obedience of God —
وَمِزَاجُهُ مِن
تَسْنِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wamizajuhu
min tasneem
Translation
And
its mixture is of Tasneem,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
whose mixture, that is to say, that with which it is mixed, is of Tasnīm, which
is explained by His [following] words:
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ
بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Pronunciation
AAaynan
yashrabu biha almuqarraboon
Translation
A
spring from which those near [to Allah] drink.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
a
spring (‘aynan is in the accusative because of an implicit [prefatory] amdahu,
‘I extol [this spring]’) from which those brought near will drink (yashrabu
bihā: [should be yashrabu] minhā, or [it may be that bihā is used because]
yashrabu is meant to imply the sense of yaltadhdhu [bihā, ‘in which they
delight’]).
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ
أَجْرَمُوا كَانُوا مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَ
Pronunciation
Inna
allatheena ajramoo kanoomina allatheena amanoo yadhakoon
Translation
Indeed,
those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Verily
the guilty, like Abū Jahl and his ilk, used to laugh at the believers, such as
‘Ammār [b. Yāsir] and Bilāl [the Ethiopian] and those like them, in mockery of
them;
وَإِذَا مَرُّوا
بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha
marroo bihim yataghamazoon
Translation
And
when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
when they, the believers, passed them by, they would wink at one another, the
guilty beckoned with their eyebrows and eyelids towards the believers in
mockery;
وَإِذَا
انقَلَبُوا إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِمُ انقَلَبُوا فَكِهِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha
inqalaboo ila ahlihimuinqalaboo fakiheen
Translation
And
when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
when they returned to their folks they would return blithely (fākihīna: a
variant reading has fakihīna), rejoicing in their [disparaging] mention of the
believers;
وَإِذَا
رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَضَالُّونَ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha
raawhum qaloo inna haola-iladalloon
Translation
And
when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
when they see them, that is, the believers, they say, ‘Lo! these [men] are
astray!’, on account of their belief in Muhammad (s).
وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا
عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ
Pronunciation
Wama
orsiloo AAalayhim hafitheen
Translation
But
they had not been sent as guardians over them.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
God,
exalted be He, says: Yet they, that is, the disbelievers, were not sent as
watchers over them, [over] the believers, to preserve them or [to keep a record
of] their deeds and thus guide them back to what is best for them.
فَالْيَوْمَ
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
Pronunciation
Falyawma
allatheena amanoomina alkuffari yadhakoon
Translation
So
Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So
today, that is, the Day of Resurrection, the believers will be laughing at the
disbelievers,
عَلَى
الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
Pronunciation
AAala
al-ara-iki yanthuroon
Translation
On
adorned couches, observing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
upon
couches, in Paradise, gazing, out from their dwellings at the disbelievers
while they are being tortured; and they will laugh at them just as they, the
disbelievers, had laughed at them in the world.
هَلْ ثُوِّبَ
الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Hal
thuwwiba alkuffaru ma kanooyafAAaloon
Translation
Have
the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have
the disbelievers been requited for what they used to do? Yes, indeed!
