Al-'Inshiqāq (The Sundering) - سورة الإنشقاق
[In
the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]
84:1
إِذَا السَّمَاءُ
انشَقَّتْ
Pronunciation
Itha
assamao inshaqqat
Translation
When
the sky has split [open]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
When
the heaven is rent asunder,
وَأَذِنَتْ
لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ
Pronunciation
Waathinat
lirabbiha wahuqqat
Translation
And
has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
heeds, gives ear to and, in rending itself asunder, obeys, its Lord as it
should, that is, as its duty is to heed and obey,
وَإِذَا الْأَرْضُ
مُدَّتْ
Pronunciation
Wa-itha
al-ardu muddat
Translation
And
when the earth has been extended
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
when the earth is stretched out, [when] its width is increased, just as a piece
of leather is stretched, so that no edifice or mountain remains upon it,
وَأَلْقَتْ مَا
فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ
Pronunciation
Waalqat
ma feeha watakhallat
Translation
And
has cast out that within it and relinquished [it]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
casts out all that is in it, of the dead, onto its surface, and empties itself,
thereof,
وَأَذِنَتْ
لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ
Pronunciation
Waathinat
lirabbiha wahuqqat
Translation
And
has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
heeds, [and] in this respect, gives ear to and obeys, its Lord, as it should:
all of this will be on the Day of Resurrection (the response to idhā, ‘when’,
and [to] all that is supplemented thereto, has been omitted; but it is
indicated by what follows it, and is implied to be [something like]
laqiya’l-insānu ‘amalahu, ‘man will encounter his deeds’).
يَا أَيُّهَا
الْإِنسَانُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَاقِيهِ
Pronunciation
Ya
ayyuha al-insanuinnaka kadihun ila rabbika kadhanfamulaqeeh
Translation
O
mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and
will meet it.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
O
man! Verily you are labouring, exerting your efforts, toward, the encounter
with, your Lord, that is, death, laboriously, and you will encounter it, that
is, you will encounter your mentioned good or evil deeds on the Day of
Resurrection.
فَأَمَّا مَنْ
أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ
Pronunciation
Faama
man ootiya kitabahubiyameenih
Translation
Then
as for he who is given his record in his right hand,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then
as for him who is given his book, the record of his deeds, in his right hand —
and this is the believer —
فَسَوْفَ
يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا
Pronunciation
Fasawfa
yuhasabu hisabanyaseera
Translation
He
will be judged with an easy account
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
he
will receive an easy reckoning, which [simply] entails the presentation of his
deeds to him, as in the hadīth of the two Sahīhs [of Bukhārī and Muslim] — in
which there is also [a hadīth saying], ‘He who is reckoned with at length, will
be destined for perdition’ — and after this presentation [of his deeds to the
believer] he will be excused,
وَيَنقَلِبُ
إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا
Pronunciation
Wayanqalibu
ila ahlihi masroora
Translation
And
return to his people in happiness.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
return to his family, in Paradise, joyful, because of it.
وَأَمَّا مَنْ
أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ
Pronunciation
Waamma
man ootiya kitabahu waraathahrih
Translation
But
as for he who is given his record behind his back,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But
as for him who is given his book from behind his back — and this is the
disbeliever, whose right hand is chained to his neck and whose left hand, by
which he is given the book, is placed behind his back,
فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُو
ثُبُورًا
Pronunciation
Fasawfa
yadAAoo thuboora
Translation
He
will cry out for destruction
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
he
will pray, upon seeing what is in it, for annihilation, he will invoke
destruction against himself by saying: yā thabūrāh, ‘O annihilation [of
mine]!’,
وَيَصْلَىٰ
سَعِيرًا
Pronunciation
Wayasla
saAAeera
Translation
And
[enter to] burn in a Blaze.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
he will enter the Blaze, an intense fire (a variant reading [for yaslā, ‘he
will enter’] has yusallā, ‘he will be admitted’).
إِنَّهُ كَانَ
فِي أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا
Pronunciation
Innahu
kana fee ahlihi masroora
Translation
Indeed,
he had [once] been among his people in happiness;
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed
among his folk, his clan, in the world, he used to be joyful, wanton, lusting
after his desires;
إِنَّهُ ظَنَّ
أَن لَّن يَحُورَ
Pronunciation
Innahu
thanna an lan yahoor
Translation
Indeed,
he had thought he would never return [to Allah].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
indeed
he thought that (an: softened in place of the hardened form, with its subject
omitted, that is to say, annahu) he would never return, to his Lord.
بَلَىٰ إِنَّ
رَبَّهُ كَانَ بِهِ بَصِيرًا
Pronunciation
Bala
inna rabbahu kana bihi baseera
Translation
But
yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever of him, Seeing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay!,
he will return to Him; indeed his Lord is ever Seer of him, knowing that he
would return to Him.
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ
بِالشَّفَقِ
Pronunciation
Fala
oqsimu bishshafaq
Translation
So
I swear by the twilight glow
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So
I swear (fa-lā: lā is extra) by the twilight (al-shafaq), the reddishness
visible in the horizon after the sunset,
وَاللَّيْلِ
وَمَا وَسَقَ
Pronunciation
Wallayli
wama wasaq
Translation
And
[by] the night and what it envelops
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
[by] the night and what it envelops, [what] it brings together of creatures and
otherwise that have entered into it,
وَالْقَمَرِ
إِذَا اتَّسَقَ
Pronunciation
Walqamari
itha ittasaq
Translation
And
[by] the moon when it becomes full
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
[by] the moon when it is at the full, and its light is complete, and this
happens during the nights of the full moon:
لَتَرْكَبُنَّ
طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ
Pronunciation
Latarkabunna
tabaqan AAan tabaq
Translation
[That]
you will surely experience state after state.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
you
will surely journey (tarkabunna is actually tarkabūnanna, but the nūn of the
indicative has been omitted because of two identical letters following one
another, and the wāw [is omitted] because of two unvocalised consonants coming
together), from stage to stage, state after state, namely, death, then life,
then what comes afterwards of the states at the Resurrection.
فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا
يُؤْمِنُونَ
Pronunciation
Fama
lahum la yu/minoon
Translation
So
what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So
what is wrong with them, that is, the disbelievers, that they do not have
faith, that is to say, what is there to prevent them from [embracing] faith; or
what argument do they have for neglecting it despite the existence of proofs
for it,
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ
عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩
Pronunciation
Wa-itha
quri-a AAalayhimu alqur-anula yasjudoon
Translation
And
when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate [to Allah]?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and,
what is wrong with them, that when the Qur’ān is recited to them they do not
prostrate?, they [do not] submit by believing in it, given its inimitability?
بَلِ الَّذِينَ
كَفَرُوا يُكَذِّبُونَ
Pronunciation
Bali
allatheena kafaroo yukaththiboon
Translation
But
those who have disbelieved deny,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay,
but the disbelievers deny, resurrection and other matters,
وَاللَّهُ
أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ
Pronunciation
Wallahu
aAAlamu bimayooAAoon
Translation
And
Allah is most knowing of what they keep within themselves.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
God knows best what they are amassing, accumulating in their scrolls, in the
way of disbelief, denial and evil deeds.
فَبَشِّرْهُم
بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Fabashshirhum
biAAathabin aleem
Translation
So
give them tidings of a painful punishment,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So
give them good tidings, inform them, of a painful chastisement,
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ
آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ
Pronunciation
Illa
allatheena amanoowaAAamiloo assalihati lahum ajrun ghayrumamnoon
Translation
Except
for those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them is a reward
uninterrupted.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except
those who believe and perform righteous deeds: theirs will be an unfailing
reward, one that is unending, undiminished and not given to them in expectance
of anything in return.
