Al-Mā`ūn (The Small Kindnesses) - سورة الماعون
[In
the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]
107:1
أَرَأَيْتَ
الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
Pronunciation
Araayta
allathee yukaththibu biddeen
Translation
Have
you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have
you seen him who denies the Judgement?, the Requital and the Reckoning, that is
to say, ‘Do you know who he is?’ If you do not know him then:
فَذَٰلِكَ
الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ
Pronunciation
Fathalika
allathee yaduAAAAualyateem
Translation
For
that is the one who drives away the orphan
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
That
is he (read an implied huwa after the fā’ [of fa-dhālika]) who repels the
orphan, that is to say, [who] violently drives him away from what is his due,
وَلَا يَحُضُّ
عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Pronunciation
Wala
yahuddu AAalataAAami almiskeen
Translation
And
does not encourage the feeding of the poor.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
does not urge, either himself or others [to], the feeding of the needy: this
was revealed regarding al-‘Āsī b. Wā’il or al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra.
فَوَيْلٌ
لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ
Pronunciation
Fawaylun
lilmusalleen
Translation
So
woe to those who pray
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So
woe to them who pray,
الَّذِينَ هُمْ
عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
Pronunciation
Allatheena
hum AAan salatihimsahoon
Translation
[But]
who are heedless of their prayer -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those
who are heedless of their prayers, neglectful, delaying them from their
appointed times,
الَّذِينَ هُمْ
يُرَاءُونَ
Pronunciation
Allatheena
hum yuraoon
Translation
Those
who make show [of their deeds]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those
who make a pretence, with prayers and otherwise,
وَيَمْنَعُونَ
الْمَاعُونَ
Pronunciation
WayamnaAAoona
almaAAoon
Translation
And
withhold [simple] assistance.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and
deny aid, as [insignificant as] a needle, a hatchet, a cooking pot or a bowl.
