Surat Al-Ĥijr (The Rocky Tract) - سورة الحجر
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
[In the Name of ALLAH, the ENTIRELY MERCIFUL, the ESPECIALLY MERCIFUL]

15:1
الر ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُّبِينٍ
Pronunciation
Alif-lam-ra tilka ayatualkitabi waqur-anin mubeen
Translation
Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Alif lām rā’: God knows best what He means by these [letters]. Those — these verses — are the verses of the Book, the Qur’ān (āyātu’l-kitābi: this annexation functions in the sense of min, ‘from’) and of a manifest Qur’ān, one that makes evident what is truth and what is falsehood (wa-qur’ānin mubīnin is [made up of] a supplement with an added adjectival qualification).
15:2
رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ كَانُوا مُسْلِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Rubama yawaddu allatheenakafaroo law kanoo muslimeen
Translation
Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
It may be that (read rubbamā or rubamā) those who disbelieve, on the Day of Resurrection, when they witness their predicament and that of the Muslims, will wish that they had been muslims (rubba here is used to indicate ‘many’, since many of them will wish this; but it is also said to indicate ‘few’, since they will be so stupefied by the terrors that they will not come out of their stupor to wish such a thing, except on a few occasions:
15:3
ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Pronunciation
Tharhum ya/kuloo wayatamattaAAoowayulhihimu al-amalu fasawfa yaAAlamoon
Translation
Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Leave them, the disbelievers, O Muhammad (s), to eat and to enjoy, this world of theirs, and that they be diverted, distracted, by hope, of a long life and other [such] matters, [that keep them] away from faith, for they will come to know, the sequel of their affair — this was [revealed] before the command to fight [them].
15:4
وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ
Pronunciation
Wama ahlakna min qaryatin illawalaha kitabun maAAloom
Translation
And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We did not destroy any town (min qaryatin: min is extra), meaning, its inhabitants, but that it had a known decree, a [pre-]determined term, after which it would be destroyed.
15:5
مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Ma tasbiqu min ommatin ajalahawama yasta/khiroon
Translation
No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
No community (min ummatin: min is extra) can outstrip its [predetermined] term nor can they [seek to] delay it, [nor can they] put it off.
15:6
وَقَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ
Pronunciation
Waqaloo ya ayyuha allatheenuzzila AAalayhi aththikru innaka lamajnoon
Translation
And they say,"O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca, say, to the Prophet (s): ‘O you, to whom the Remembrance, the Qur’ān — as you claim — has been revealed, lo! you are indeed possessed!
15:7
لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
Pronunciation
Law ma ta/teena bilmala-ikatiin kunta mina assadiqeen
Translation
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are of the truthful?’, in saying that you are a prophet and that this Qur’ān is from God.
15:8
مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوا إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ
Pronunciation
Ma nunazzilu almala-ikata illabilhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareen
Translation
We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
God, exalted be He, says: The angels do not descend (tanazzalu: one of the two tā’ letters [of tatanazzalu] has been omitted) save with the truth, with the chastisement; and then, that is, upon the descent of the angels with the chastisement, they [the disbelievers] would not be reprieved, [would not] be granted respite.
15:9
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
Pronunciation
Inna nahnu nazzalna aththikrawa-inna lahu lahafithoon
Translation
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Verily it is We (nahnu emphasises the subject of inna, or [functions as] a separating pronoun) Who have revealed the Remembrance, the Qur’ān, and assuredly We will preserve it, against substitution, distortion, additions and omissions.
15:10
وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad arsalna min qablika feeshiyaAAi al-awwaleen
Translation
And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily We sent before you, messengers, to former factions, sects.
15:11
وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ
Pronunciation
Wama ya/teehim min rasoolin illakanoo bihi yastahzi-oon
Translation
And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And never did a messenger come to them but that they mocked him, in the same way that your people have mocked you — this is meant to comfort the Prophet (s).
15:12
كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Kathalika naslukuhu fee quloobialmujrimeen
Translation
Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Thus We cause it to find its way, in other words, in the same way that We have caused denial to enter the hearts of those [individuals], We cause it to enter, into the hearts of the sinners, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca.
15:13
لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
Pronunciation
La yu/minoona bihi waqad khalatsunnatu al-awwaleen
Translation
They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They do not believe in him, in the Prophet (s), even though the example of the men of old has already gone before, that is, the way of God [in dealing] with them [those of old], by chastising them for denying [the truthfulness of] their prophets: those [Meccans] are like these former.
15:14
وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ فَظَلُّوا فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ
Pronunciation
Walaw fatahna AAalayhim babanmina assama-i fathalloo feehiyaAArujoon
Translation
And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And even if We were to open for them a gate from the heaven, and they were to continue ascending through it, the gate,
15:15
لَقَالُوا إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ
Pronunciation
Laqaloo innama sukkirat absarunabal nahnu qawmun mashooroon
Translation
They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
they would say, ‘It is merely that our eyes have been dazzled, they have been shut. Nay, we are a folk bewitched!’, imagining this.
15:16
وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِي السَّمَاءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّاهَا لِلنَّاظِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad jaAAalna fee assama-iburoojan wazayyannaha linnathireen
Translation
And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily We have placed in the heaven constellations, twelve [of them]: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo (al-sunbula), Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, which are the mansions of the seven orbiting planets: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus: Taurus and Libra, Mercury: Gemini and Virgo, the Moon: Cancer, the Sun: Leo, Jupiter: Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn: Capricorn and Aquarius; and We have adorned it, with [these] planets, for beholders;
15:17
وَحَفِظْنَاهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wahafithnahamin kulli shaytanin rajeem
Translation
And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah ]
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and We have guarded them, with meteors, from every outcast devil;
15:18
إِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ
Pronunciation
Illa mani istaraqa assamAAafaatbaAAahu shihabun mubeen
Translation
Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except the one who listens by stealth — he is pursued by a clear flame, a shining meteor that burns him, or pierces him or drives him insane.
15:19
وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ
Pronunciation
Wal-arda madadnahawaalqayna feeha rawasiya waanbatnafeeha min kulli shay-in mawzoon
Translation
And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And the earth We have stretched it out, spread it flat, and cast therein firm mountains, lest it should sway beneath its inhabitants, and caused to grow therein every kind of balanced thing, [every kind of thing] known and determined.
15:20
وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُ بِرَازِقِينَ
Pronunciation
WajaAAalna lakum feeha maAAayishawaman lastum lahu biraziqeen
Translation
And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We have made for you therein [means of] livelihood (read ma‘āyish), such as fruits and grains, and, We have made [this] for you, those for whom you do not provide, such as servants, [crawling] creatures and cattle; it is God Who provides for them.
15:21
وَإِن مِّن شَيْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَائِنُهُ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ
Pronunciation
Wa-in min shay-in illa AAindanakhaza-inuhu wama nunazziluhu illa biqadarinmaAAloom
Translation
And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And there is not a thing but that the stores thereof, the keys to its stores, are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure, according to the benefits [of all creatures].
15:22
وَأَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ وَمَا أَنتُمْ لَهُ بِخَازِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Waarsalna arriyaha lawaqihafaanzalna mina assama-i maanfaasqaynakumoohu wama antum lahu bikhazineen
Translation
And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We send the winds as fertilisers, to fertilise the clouds, whereupon they fill up with water, and send down out of the heaven, [out of] the clouds, water, rain, so that We give it to you to drink, for you are not the storers thereof, that is, the stores thereof are not in your control.
15:23
وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوَارِثُونَ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna lanahnu nuhyeewanumeetu wanahnu alwarithoon
Translation
And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed it is We Who give life and bring death, and We are the heirs, Who shall endure, inheriting all creation.
15:24
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad AAalimna almustaqdimeenaminkum walaqad AAalimna almusta/khireen
Translation
And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily We know the predecessors among you, that is, those creatures from Adam who have already passed, and verily We know the successors, those who will come afterwards, until the Day of Resurrection.
15:25
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna rabbaka huwa yahshuruhuminnahu hakeemun AAaleem
Translation
And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it is indeed your Lord Who will gather them, lo! He is Wise, in His actions, Knower, of His creatures.
15:26
وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ مِن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
Pronunciation
Walaqad khalaqna al-insana minsalsalin min hama-in masnoon
Translation
And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily We created man, Adam, out of a dry [clinking] clay, that gives off a clinking sound when it is tapped, of malleable mud, black [mud].
15:27
وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ السَّمُومِ
Pronunciation
Waljanna khalaqnahumin qablu min nari assamoom
Translation
And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And the jānn, the father of the jinn, namely, Iblīs, We created beforehand — that is, before the creation of Adam — out of the permeative fire, a smokeless fire that can escape through openings.
15:28
وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
Pronunciation
Wa-ith qala rabbuka lilmala-ikatiinnee khaliqun basharan min salsalin min hama-inmasnoon
Translation
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And, mention, when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am going to create a mortal out of a dry clay [drawn] from a malleable mud.
15:29
فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Fa-itha sawwaytuhu wanafakhtu feehimin roohee faqaAAoo lahu sajideen
Translation
And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So, when I have proportioned him, completed him, and breathed, caused to flow, of My Spirit in him, so that he becomes a living thing — the annexation of ‘the Spirit’ to him is a conferring of honour upon Adam — fall down in prostration before him!’, a prostration [meant as an act] of salutation by bowing.
15:30
فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ
Pronunciation
Fasajada almala-ikatu kulluhumajmaAAoon
Translation
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And so the angels prostrated, all of them together (kulluhum ajma‘ūn contains two elements of emphasis),
15:31
إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Illa ibleesa aba an yakoonamaAAa assajideen
Translation
Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except Iblīs, the father of the jinn — he was [standing] among the angels: he refused to be among those prostrating.
15:32

قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala ya ibleesu ma lakaalla takoona maAAa assajideen
Translation
[Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, [God] exalted be He: ‘O Iblīs what is wrong with you, what prevents you, that you are not among those prostrating?’
15:33
قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُ مِن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
Pronunciation
Qala lam akun li-asjuda libasharinkhalaqtahu min salsalin min hama-in masnoon
Translation
He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Said he, ‘I was not about to prostrate myself, I should not prostrate myself, before a mortal whom You have created out of a dry clay [drawn] from malleable mud’.
15:34
قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ
Pronunciation
Qala fakhruj minhafa-innaka rajeem
Translation
[Allah] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Said He, ‘Then be gone from hence, that is, from the Garden — but it is also said, from the heavens — for you are indeed accursed, outcast.
15:35
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna AAalayka allaAAnata ila yawmiaddeen
Translation
And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed the curse shall rest upon you until the Day of Judgement’, [the Day] of Requital.
15:36
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbi faanthirneeila yawmi yubAAathoon
Translation
He said,"My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Said he, ‘My Lord! Reprieve me until the day when they, mankind, shall be resurrected’.
15:37
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنظَرِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala fa-innaka mina almunthareen
Translation
[Allah] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Said He, ‘Then lo! you are of those reprieved,
15:38
إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُومِ
Pronunciation
Ila yawmi alwaqti almaAAloom
Translation
Until the Day of the time well-known."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
until the day of the known time’, the time of [the blowing of] the First Trumpet.
15:39
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala rabbi bima aghwaytaneelaozayyinanna lahum fee al-ardi walaoghwiyannahumajmaAAeen
Translation
[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Said he, ‘My Lord, because You have lead me astray (bi-mā, ‘because’, the bi- is for oaths, the response for which is [what follows]) I shall adorn for them [evil acts], acts of disobedience, in the earth and I shall lead them astray, all of them;
15:40
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ
Pronunciation
Illa AAibadaka minhumualmukhlaseen
Translation
Except, among them, Your chosen servants."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except those servants of Yours who are sincerely devoted [to You]’, namely, believers.
15:41
قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ عَلَيَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ
Pronunciation
Qala hatha siratunAAalayya mustaqeem
Translation
[Allah] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, [God] exalted be He, said, ‘This is a straight path [leading] to Me,
15:42
إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna AAibadee laysa laka AAalayhimsultanun illa mani ittabaAAaka mina alghaween
Translation
Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
in other words, truly over My servants, that is, believers, you shall have no warrant, [no] power, except those who follow you from among the perverse, the disbelievers.
15:43
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-inna jahannama lamawAAiduhum ajmaAAeen
Translation
And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And truly Hell shall be their tryst, all of them, that is, all those who follow you, shall be with you [in Hell].
15:44
لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ
Pronunciation
Laha sabAAatu abwabin likullibabin minhum juz-on maqsoom
Translation
It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
It has seven gates, [seven] layers — to each gate, therein, belongs an appointed portion, lot, of them.
15:45
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
Pronunciation
Inna almuttaqeena fee jannatinwaAAuyoon
Translation
Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly the God-fearing shall be amidst gardens, orchards, and springs’, flowing through them.
15:46

ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ آمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Odkhulooha bisalamin amineen
Translation
[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And it shall be said to them: ‘Enter them in peace, that is, safe from all danger — or [it means enter] with [the greeting of] ‘Peace!’, in other words: say, ‘Peace’ and then enter, secure!’, from all terror.
15:47
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ
Pronunciation
WanazaAAna ma fee sudoorihimmin ghillin ikhwanan AAala sururin mutaqabileen
Translation
And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We remove whatever rancour, spite, may be in their breasts. As brethren (ikhwānan is a circumstantial qualifier referring to them), [they shall recline] upon couches, facing one another (mutaqābilīn is also a circumstantial qualifier), in other words, they do not look upon each other’s backs, because the couches revolve with them in them.
15:48
لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ
Pronunciation
La yamassuhum feeha nasabunwama hum minha bimukhrajeen
Translation
No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
No toil, [no] weariness, will touch them, nor will they be expelled from thence, ever.
15:49
نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
Pronunciation
Nabbi/ AAibadee annee anaalghafooru arraheem
Translation
[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Tell, inform, O Muhammad (s), My servants that verily I am the Forgiving, of believers, the Merciful, to them,
15:50
وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الْأَلِيمُ
Pronunciation
Waanna AAathabee huwa alAAathabual-aleem
Translation
And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and that My chastisement, of those who are disobedient, is the painful chastisement.
15:51
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ
Pronunciation
Wanabbi/hum AAan dayfi ibraheem
Translation
And inform them about the guests of Abraham,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And tell them of the guests of Abraham, that is, the angels — there were twelve, ten or three of them, among them Gabriel;
15:52
إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ
Pronunciation
Ith dakhaloo AAalayhi faqaloosalaman qala inna minkum wajiloon
Translation
When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[how] when they entered unto him, and said, ‘Peace!’, that is, [they said] this very word (salām). He, Abraham, said, after having offered them food which they did not eat: ‘Lo! we are afraid of you’.
15:53
قَالُوا لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Qaloo la tawjal innanubashshiruka bighulamin AAaleem
Translation
[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Do not be afraid; lo!, we, are the messengers of your Lord [sent to], give you good tidings of a knowledgeable boy’, one very knowledgeable [boy], namely, Isaac — as we mentioned in sūrat Hūd [Q. 11:69].
15:54
قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِي عَلَىٰ أَن مَّسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala abashshartumoonee AAalaan massaniya alkibaru fabima tubashshiroon
Translation
He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘Do you give me good tidings, of a boy, when old age has befallen me?’ (‘alā an massaniya l-kibaru is a circumstantial qualifier), in other words, despite the fact of its having befallen me? So, of what, thing, do you give me good tidings?’ (an interrogative meant to indicate amazement).
15:55
قَالُوا بَشَّرْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ الْقَانِطِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo bashsharnaka bilhaqqifala takun mina alqaniteen
Translation
They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘We give you good tidings in truth, sincerely; so do not be of the despairing’, the despondent.
15:56
قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِ إِلَّا الضَّالُّونَ
Pronunciation
Qala waman yaqnatu min rahmatirabbihi illa addalloon
Translation
He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘And who — in other words, no one — despairs (read yaqnitu or yaqnatu) of the mercy of his Lord, save those who are astray?’, [save] disbelievers.
15:57
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala fama khatbukumayyuha almursaloon
Translation
[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘So what is your business, O you who have been sent [by God]?’
15:58
قَالُوا إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo inna orsilna ilaqawmin mujrimeen
Translation
They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘We have been sent to a sinning folk, a disbelieving [folk], namely, the people of Lot, in order to destroy them;
15:59
إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Illa ala lootin innalamunajjoohum ajmaAAeen
Translation
Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
[all] except the family of Lot; indeed we shall save them, all of them, because of their faith,
15:60
إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ قَدَّرْنَا ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ الْغَابِرِينَ
Pronunciation
Illa imraatahu qaddarna innahalamina alghabireen
Translation
Except his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
except his wife — We have decreed that she indeed should be of those who will remain behind’, [of] those who will stay behind in the chastisement, because of her unbelief.
15:61
فَلَمَّا جَاءَ آلَ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلُونَ
Pronunciation
Falamma jaa ala lootinalmursaloon
Translation
And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And when those who had been sent [by God] came to the family of Lot, that is, to Lot [himself],
15:62
قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ
Pronunciation
Qala innakum qawmun munkaroon
Translation
He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
he said, to them, ‘Indeed you are strangers’, that is, I do not know you.
15:63
قَالُوا بَلْ جِئْنَاكَ بِمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo bal ji/naka bimakanoo feehi yamtaroon
Translation
They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Rather, we have come to you because of that which they, your people, used to doubt, namely, the chastisement.
15:64
وَأَتَيْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَادِقُونَ
Pronunciation
Waataynaka bilhaqqiwa-inna lasadiqoon
Translation
And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And we have brought you the Truth and indeed we speak truthfully, in what we say.
15:65
فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ وَاتَّبِعْ أَدْبَارَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَامْضُوا حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
Pronunciation
Faasri bi-ahlika biqitAAin minaallayli wattabiAA adbarahum wala yaltafitminkum ahadun wamdoo haythutu/maroon
Translation
So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So travel with your family in a portion of the night and follow their rear, walk behind them; and let none of you turn round, lest he see the dreadful nature of that [punishment] which will be sent down on them, and go whither you are commanded’, namely, [to] Syria.
15:66
وَقَضَيْنَا إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ الْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ
Pronunciation
Waqadayna ilayhi thalikaal-amra anna dabira haola-i maqtooAAunmusbiheen
Translation
And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We conveyed, We revealed, to him the matter, which was, that these [sinners] was to be eradicated by morning (musbihīn is a circumstantial qualifier,), in other words, their annihilation will take place in the morning.
15:67
وَجَاءَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ
Pronunciation
Wajaa ahlu almadeenati yastabshiroon
Translation
And the people of the city came rejoicing.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And then came the people of the city, the city of Sodom, that is, the people of Lot, upon being told that there were handsome clean-shaven individuals — namely, the angels — in the house of Lot, rejoicing (yastabshirūn is a circumstantial qualifier), desiring to commit an abomination with them.
15:68
قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ ضَيْفِي فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ
Pronunciation
Qala inna haola-i dayfeefala tafdahoon
Translation
[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He, Lot, said, ‘Lo! these are my guests, so do not disgrace me;
15:69
وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ
Pronunciation
Wattaqoo Allaha walatukhzoon
Translation
And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and fear God, and do not humiliate me’, by seeking them to commit an abomination with them.
15:70
قَالُوا أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pronunciation
Qaloo awa lam nanhaka AAani alAAalameen
Translation
They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
They said, ‘Have we not forbidden you from [entertaining] anyone?’, from offering them hospitality?
15:71
قَالَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ بَنَاتِي إِن كُنتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ
Pronunciation
Qala haola-i banateein kuntum faAAileen
Translation
[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
He said, ‘These here are my daughters, if you must be doing’, what you desire [to do] in the way of satisfying your lust, then marry them. God, exalted be He, says:
15:72
لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
Pronunciation
LaAAamruka innahum lafee sakratihimyaAAmahoona
Translation
By your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
By your life — this is an address to the Prophet (s) — in their drunkenness they were bewildered, hesitant.
15:73
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ
Pronunciation
Faakhathat-humu assayhatumushriqeen
Translation
So the shriek seized them at sunrise.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then the Cry, the Cry of Gabriel, seized them at sunrise.
15:74
فَجَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
Pronunciation
FajaAAalna AAaliyaha safilahawaamtarna AAalayhim hijaratan minsijjeel
Translation
And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We made their, that is, their cities’, topmost part their nethermost, by Gabriel’s raising them [the cities] to the heaven and dropping them face down onto the earth, and We rained on them stones of baked clay, clay baked in fire.
15:75
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatinlilmutawassimeen
Translation
Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed in that, which is mentioned, there are signs, indications of God’s Oneness, for those who take note, [those who] observe and take heed.
15:76
وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍ
Pronunciation
Wa-innaha labisabeelin muqeem
Translation
And indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And indeed they, that is, the cities of the people of Lot, are on a road that [still] remains, Quraysh’s route to Syria, [one] not yet effaced: so why do they not take heed from their example?
15:77
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna fee thalika laayatanlilmu/mineen
Translation
Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
There is indeed a sign, a lesson, in that for believers.
15:78
وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ لَظَالِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Wa-in kana as-habual-aykati lathalimeen
Translation
And the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And certainly (in has been softened, in other words [understand it as being] innahu) the dwellers in the wood, a huddle of trees near Midian — these were the people of [the prophet] Shu‘ayb — were evildoers, for denying Shu‘ayb.
15:79
فَانتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ
Pronunciation
Fantaqamna minhum wa-innahumalabi-imamin mubeen
Translation
So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So We exacted retribution from them, by destroying them through extreme heat. And certainly both of them, that is, the cities of the people of Lot and those of [the dwellers in] the wood, are upon a open road, plain [to see]: so will you not take heed from their example, O people of Mecca?
15:80
وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad kaththaba as-habualhijri almursaleen
Translation
And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily the dwellers in al-Hijr — a valley between Medina and Syria — namely, [the tribe of] Thamūd, denied those who had been sent [by God], when they denied [the prophet] Sālih, as this constituted a denial of the other messengers, since they all shared the fact that they came with [the Message proclaiming] the Oneness of God.
15:81
وَآتَيْنَاهُمْ آيَاتِنَا فَكَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ
Pronunciation
Waataynahum ayatinafakanoo AAanha muAArideen
Translation
And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And We brought them Our signs, by way of the she-camel [of Sālih], but they were averse [to them], refusing to reflect on them.
15:82
وَكَانُوا يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا آمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
Wakanoo yanhitoona mina aljibalibuyootan amineen
Translation
And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And they used to hew out dwellings from the mountains, feeling secure.
15:83
فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ
Pronunciation
Faakhathat-humu assayhatumusbiheen
Translation
But the shriek seized them at early morning.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
But the Cry seized them in the morning.
15:84
فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
Pronunciation
Fama aghna AAanhum ma kanooyaksiboon
Translation
So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And so that which they used to count as gain, in the way of building fortresses and amassing riches, did not avail, [did not] protect, them, from the chastisement.
15:85
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَآتِيَةٌ ۖ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِيلَ
Pronunciation
Wama khalaqna assamawatiwal-arda wama baynahuma illabilhaqqi wa-inna assaAAata laatiyatunfasfahi assafhaaljameel
Translation
And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
We did not create the heavens and the earth and all that is between them save with the Truth. And truly the Hour shall come, without doubt, whereupon every person will be requited according to his deeds. So be forgiving, O Muhammad (s), to your people, with gracious forgiveness: turn away from them without [any feeling of] anxiety — this was abrogated by the ‘sword’ verse [Q. 9:5].
15:86
إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ
Pronunciation
Inna rabbaka huwa alkhallaqualAAaleem
Translation
Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Truly your Lord, He is the Creator, of everything, the Knowing, of everything.
15:87
وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad ataynaka sabAAan minaalmathanee walqur-ana alAAatheem
Translation
And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily We have given you seven of the oft-repeated [verses] — the Prophet (s) said that this meant [sūrat] al-Fātiha, as reported by the two Shaykhs [Bukhārī and Muslim], since it is repeated in every unit of prayer (rak‘a) — and the great Qur’ān.
15:88
لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Pronunciation
La tamuddanna AAaynayka ila mamattaAAna bihi azwajan minhum wala tahzanAAalayhim wakhfid janahaka lilmu/mineen
Translation
Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of the disbelievers, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Do not extend your glance toward that which We have given different groups of them to enjoy, and do not grieve for them, should they not believe, and lower your wing, temper your nature, for the believers.
15:89
وَقُلْ إِنِّي أَنَا النَّذِيرُ الْمُبِينُ
Pronunciation
Waqul innee ana annatheerualmubeen
Translation
And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And say: ‘Indeed, I am the warner, of God’s chastisement, lest it be sent down on you, the clear [warner], clear in [his] warning.
15:90
كَمَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِينَ
Pronunciation
Kama anzalna AAalaalmuqtasimeen
Translation
Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Even as We sent down, chastisement, on those who make division, the Jews and the Christians,
15:91
الَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ
Pronunciation
Allatheena jaAAaloo alqur-anaAAideen
Translation
Who have made the Qur'an into portions.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those who have reduced the Recitation, namely, those scriptures revealed to them, to parts, believing in some and disbelieving in others. It is [alternatively] said that the individuals meant here were those who ‘divided up’ among themselves the roads to Mecca, barring people from Islam. Some of them said that the Qur’ān was sorcery, some that it was soothsaying, and others that it was poetry.
15:92
فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Pronunciation
Fawarabbika lanas-alannahum ajmaAAeen
Translation
So by your Lord, We will surely question them all
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
By your Lord, We shall question them all — a questioning involving rebuke —
15:93
عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
Pronunciation
AAamma kanoo yaAAmaloon
Translation
About what they used to do.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
about what they used to do.
15:94
فَاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
Pronunciation
FasdaAA bima tu/maruwaaAArid AAani almushrikeen
Translation
Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So proclaim, O Muhammad (s), what you have been commanded, to [proclaim], in other words, declare it openly and carry it out, and turn away from the idolaters — this was [revealed] before the command to struggle [against the idolaters].
15:95
إِنَّا كَفَيْنَاكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ
Pronunciation
Inna kafaynaka almustahzi-een
Translation
Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Indeed We have sufficed you against the mockers, [who mocked] you, by Our having destroyed each one of them through some harm, and these were: al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra, al-‘Āsī b. Wā’il, ‘Udayy b. Qays, al-Aswad b. al-Muttalib and al-Aswad b. ‘Abd Yaghūth,
15:96
الَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Pronunciation
Allatheena yajAAaloona maAAa Allahiilahan akhara fasawfa yaAAlamoon
Translation
Who make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those [mockers] who set up besides God another god: (this [entire clause] is an adjectival qualification; but it is also said to be the subject, and because there is an implicit conditional meaning [in the above-mentioned clause], the [particle] fā’ has been inserted into the predicate, which is [the following]) soon they will know, the sequel of their affair.
15:97
وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ
Pronunciation
Walaqad naAAlamu annaka yadeequ sadrukabima yaqooloon
Translation
And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And verily (wa-laqad is for confirmation) We know that your breast is [at times] oppressed by what they say, in the way of mockery and denial.
15:98
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ السَّاجِدِينَ
Pronunciation
Fasabbih bihamdi rabbika wakunmina assajideen
Translation
So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So glorify, intimately [repeating], the praise of your Lord, in other words, say subhāna’Llāhi wa-bi-hamdihi — and be of those who prostrate themselves, those who pray;
15:99
وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِينُ
Pronunciation
WaAAbud rabbaka hattaya/tiyaka alyaqeen
Translation
And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death).
